Job Purpose:
Reporting to the Director of Sustainability and Energy Management, the Assistant Director, Energy Programs will lead energy analysis and reporting efforts and implement energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction projects. Reporting to the Director of Sustainability and Energy Management and working closely with the Assistant Director, Sustainability, this position will be a key member of the team that helps the College reach carbon neutrality by 2030. Key responsibilities include collecting and analyzing energy data, identifying and implementing energy reduction projects, and tracking and reporting progress towards goals. This position will also collaborate effectively with a diverse group of campus stakeholders, including Facilities, academic departments, and Residence Life for a holistic approach towards energy management
Essential Functions:
Data entry, management, and analysis
  • Input, maintain, and monitor energy-related data in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Manage historical energy-related data records and audit for accuracy.
  • Identify and communicate potential data errors and high usage.
  • Optimize the energy information system for data managing, analyzing, and reporting.
  • Implement and manage an energy-related greenhouse gas emissions inventory.
Project identification and implementation
  • Utilize data to identify and implement energy- and greenhouse gas-reduction projects.
  • Monitor federal, state, and local utilities incentive programs and apply those programs at the College where and when feasible and cost-effective.
  • Maintain current research of energy management best-practices and implement where feasible and cost-effective.
  • Maintain records and results of energy-related infrastructure and projects.
  • Develop a project planning sheet, track and report progress on systems and platforms.
  • Identify and implement renewable energy and demand-reduction projects.
  • For new construction and major renovations, assist with energy reduction, decarbonization, and sustainable building certification (e.g., LEED, Living Building, WELL) planning efforts.
  • Collaborate with Facilities and Campus Services units on energy conservation initiatives and energy management issues.
  • Collaborate with College stakeholders (e.g., laboratories, dining halls, residence halls) on energy-awareness and reduction projects.
Track, report, and communicate results
  • Develop and maintain monthly, semesterly, and yearly reports for energy-related data.
  • Maintain accurate baseline data and progress towards 2030 goals as established in the SAVE: Sustainable Action / Visible Effects sustainability strategic plan.
  • Develop energy program goals for each fiscal year consistent with the sustainability strategic plan.
  • Provide data and analysis for the SAVE Annual Report.
  • Effectively communicate energy-related data to key stakeholders, including the Sustainability Office, Facilities and Campus Services, the President’s Advisory Committee on Sustainability (PACS), the Office of Housing and Residence Life, and the broader campus community.
  • Track energy, greenhouse gas emissions, and cost results for projects.
Ongoing maintenance of energy systems
  • Maintain partnerships with The Claremont College Services (TCCS) and utility companies for accurate electricity, natural gas, and solar PV meters’ monthly and real-time readings.
  • Optimize data collection by integrating real-time meters into the energy information system.
  • Work with Facilities and Campus Services (FCS) to develop preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Assist in developing and implementing control strategies and maintenance planning for building HVAC systems and central plant systems future projects.
  • Implement retro-commissioning and continuous commissioning in selected buildings to reduce energy and cost consumption and balance occupant comfort.
Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in engineering, environmental science, physics, or related technical/engineering discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience, is required.
  • Experience: A minimum of one year’s hands-on experience in energy management, building systems, program/project administration or similar field is required.
  • Certification: Current certification as Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or the ability to obtain within two years is desired.
Required Knowledge and Critical Skills:
The Assistant Director, Energy Programs must possess the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, or be able to demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed using other skills and abilities not listed below.
  • Experience in detail-oriented and high-level data analysis.
  • Understanding and knowledge of building automation systems and energy information systems.
  • High level of results-driven project management and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to physically inspect buildings & equipment across campus.
  • Desire to collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders to facilitate organizational change.
  • Ability to tactfully engage with and communicate complex information to a diverse audience.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
REQUIRED HOURS:
The regular hours for this full-time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday. Holiday, weekend, and evening work hours may be required. Travel may be required. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division.
ANNUAL SALARY:
The annual salary for this role is between $101,461 and $109,500 with a competitive benefits package. The specific factors that the College will consider when offering a salary to an individual will include, but not be limited to: education, training, relevant prior experience, and performance in prior roles.
