Job purpose
Our company is seeking a responsible part-time Assistant Science Illuminator to equip students with strategies to understand key science ideas surrounding watersheds, water supplies, and wastewater treatment. The illuminator MUST have a science background and possess a general knowledge of the water treatment process and infrastructure. He/she will assist with both in class and outdoor learning experiences, as well as hands-on experiments and challenges that face major cities, such as lead service lines, and the role pipe material plays in the city’s water infrastructure, including the changes in treatment.
The Assistant Science Illuminator is responsible for working under the Lead Science Illuminator surrounding instructional planning, implementation and natural development of the curriculum, student supervision, and evaluation of students. He/she will set up and maintain a classroom that is conducive to learning and provide for the health and safety of the students. He/she will also assist invited guests to help facilitate leadership modules that reflect civic engagement, personal development and responsibility, knowledge of government, community engagement, and the like. The Assistant will also work with the Program Manager and Lead Illuminator to enroll students from various schools into the program.
The ideal candidate for this job is energetic, has a genuine interest in helping students, and has a strong commitment to creating a welcoming and positive environment. He/she must be a creative problem-solver, critical thinker, have patience, demonstrate perseverance, and have keen decision-making skills. He or she must also be able to maintain consistent reports on students and be able to share those reports with their supervisor.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Utilizes established curriculum objectives in planning lessons
- Participates in the development and evaluation of curriculum
- Prepares and submits lesson plans for each module
- Communicates the objectives of the lesson to the students in a clear and concise manner
- Demonstrates knowledge, understanding and application of subject matter
- Adapts teaching methods and materials to meet the needs of all students, their interests, and abilities
- Utilizes a variety of instructional strategies and materials
- Incorporates appropriate educational technology in the classroom
- Utilizes varied and effective questioning techniques
- Develops and encourages critical thinking skills
- Maximizes the use of instructional time through the establishment of effective procedural routines
- Monitors student performance and maintains records of students’ assessment results and attendance
- Accounts for supplies, materials, and equipment
- Encourages high expectations for all students
- Demonstrates enthusiasm and excitement for learning
- Provides for health and safety of all students
- Promotes student leadership, a sense of personal growth and positive self-esteem within students
- Promotes cooperation and teamwork
- Demonstrates sensitivity to cultural diversity
- Seeks assistance, when necessary
- Accepts and uses constructive suggestions
- Participates in professional improvement opportunities including, reading current materials, and participating in trainings
- Exhibits good rapport with students

Additional Expectations/Qualifications
- Must show evidence of working with grades 6-12 students
- Bachelor’s Degree with a concentration in science or a related field
- Must have a flexible schedule
- Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Good interpersonal skills
- Required criminal history background check
- Required proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status
- Required purchase of contractor insurance
- Must have consistent access to vehicle transportation
- Must be willing and able to travel 5 times a month to and from Newfoundland NJ Area for program
- Must be dressed in professional, casual attire
- Must attend a new Illuminator orientation session
