Background Investigator
In this position, you will perform background investigations of potential civilian and sworn applicants to include professional interviews, research of work history, and review criminal behaviors in accordance with policies and procedures established by the department.

Essential Job Functions- the basic job duties an employee must be able to perform:
- Perform professionally complete and thorough investigation of potential civilian and sworn applicants for positions with CSPD
- Conduct professional interviews of the candidate, references, and contacts
- Verify the accuracy of the information that has been provided and obtained during the investigation
- Communicate effectively with candidates during the background process
- Completed detailed unbiased report to human resources including all pertinent information regarding the suitability of the Candidate for the civilian position or position of a police officer
- Work collaboratively with members of the background unit and human resources
We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:
- Knowledge of modern office procedures, methods, and equipment, including computers and supporting software
- Knowledge of investigative processes and procedures
- Ability to prioritize, multitask and maintain a detailed schedule
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely orally and in writing
Successful candidates will have
- A high school diploma or GED
- Three years of full-time experience conducting investigations
- One year experience with any law enforcement agency
- Possess, or obtain within three months of hire, NCIC (National Crime Information Center) and CCIC (Colorado Crime Information Center) certifications
Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.
Ideal candidates will also have
- Strong computer skills to include MS Word, Excel, and databases
- Experience with background investigation software
- Specialized training related to background investigations
Additional Information
Primary work environment will be in an office setting with occasional travel from site to site to conduct interviews.
The job offer will be contingent upon successful completion of a polygraph examination, extensive background check, and other pre-employment assessments.

The City of Colorado Springs offers additional compensation depending on the position, area of assignment, and specific job assignments, including shift differential, pay differential, acting or lead, special assignment, hazard pay, longevity, cell phone allowance, uniform allowance, relocation, awards, standby, call out, compensatory time off, tuition, overtime, extra duty, incentive, holiday premium, proficiency, and vacation sell back.
