Description of Work Unit
CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. Position Summary
A Biological Science Field Technician position is available with Colorado State University and the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML)to be located at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin.

This position will lead field crews for CEMML’s Fort McCoy Invasive Species, Wildlife and Threatened and Endangered Species projects. Position will assist in the training of and leading of field crew members for wild lupine mapping and invasive species treatment and survey methods, collect data and have strong plant species identification skills. Position will complete tasks assigned by supervisor on projects designated by Fort McCoy Federal staff and in compliance with Fort McCoy Integrated Natural Resources Plan, Invasive Species Management Plan and Endangered Resources Management Plan. A high percentage of time will be put towards completing field work projects as directed by Biologists and the Natural Resources Supervisor on a variety of projects.

In addition to leading field crews, the position will assist in game harvest registration to include deer aging, harvest data collection, game species surveys and operation of heavy equipment for habitat and invasive species projects. Additional time will be spent as a prescribed fire field crew member for natural resources and range/safety prescribed fire units on Fort McCoy. Position will be delegated to complete work summaries and reports as needed. Position requires strong knowledge of Arc GIS, Access and Excel Database application. Position will entail occasional night and weekend work to conduct surveys and game species harvest registration. Position will operate UTV, Skid steer, Tractor, Fecon Mower, Chainsaw and other power tools. Position will coordinate with range control on accessing areas daily and ensure field crews are working in approved locations, using appropriate herbicide mixes and conducting proper herbicide application methods. Position will also work independently at times or be part of a group.

Required Job Qualifications
  • BA/BS in wildlife management, forestry, conservation biology, horticulture, or related applied science, with emphasis on natural resource management.
  • Two years of relevant experience in natural resource field.
  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a State of Wisconsin certification for herbicide application, and certification as a wildland firefighter.
  • Position requires the ability to work outdoors in rough terrain and inclement weather, and to lift 50-70 pounds repetitively.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
