    Position Summary: To develop students' business academics (e.g. reading, math, writing, etc.) and business skills (e.g. word processing, typing, bookkeeping, record keeping, office procedures, business communications, etc.), as well as an understanding of our American business system and its place in the nation's and world's economy; to provide knowledge needed for intelligent consumption of business services; to develop practical business skills for personal use or for use in business occupations; and to encourage students to develop work and personal habits essential for success in business.

    Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree with extensive knowledge of content area, resources and state of the art practices. Appropriate teaching certificate – Comprehensive Business; dual certification in Teacher of the Handicapped or Teacher of Students with Disabilities preferred.

    Essential Duties: The Business Education Teacher has the duties and responsibilities commonly associated with this position, including (but not limited to) the following, which are performed directly or through the proper delegation of authority, within the framework of the general laws of New Jersey, the regulations of the NJ State Department of Education, the policies and rules of the Nutley School District, and the terms of the contract with the Nutley Education Association, with all of which he/she is expected to be familiar. As well, the position is responsible for duties commonly associated with communication positions, which are performed directly or through the proper delegation of authority.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Develops and administers business education curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
    • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
    • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction
    • Teaches knowledge and skills in the following subjects to secondary students: typing, note-taking, bookkeeping, record-keeping, office procedures, business communications, data processing or basic business principles.
    • Provides instruction on the use and development of skills in the use of office equipment, technology (including the use of computer network systems and applications, and business techniques such as those used in merchandising.
    • Prepares appropriate instructional aids and display materials to enhance learning.
    • Instructs students in use, care, and safe operation of business equipment.
    • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs.
    • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research, and by maintaining professional relationships with members of the business community.
    • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
    • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
    • Ensures that student conduct conforms with the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
    • Coordinates with other professional staff members, especially within grade level, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
    • Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records.
    General Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Uphold and enforce school, administrative, board and state rules, regulations and policies.
    • Implement the district’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
    • Assume responsibility for condition of assigned room(s) and for equipment and materials issued for his/her use.
    • Communicate with parents and school personnel as necessary to discuss pupil progress under direction of the building principal.
    • Maintain required records, completes reports, and handles other routine assignments in an appropriate and punctual manner.
    • Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs as assigned.
    • Maintain standards of pupil behavior to provide an orderly, productive school and classroom environment.
    • Develop lesson plans and assists in the selection of textbooks and other instructional materials to adapt to the curriculum.
    • Maintain professional development through participation in such activities as in-service education, workshops, and self-selected professional growth activities.
    • Attend school-related night activities when necessary and according to school policy.
    • Maintain a safe school environment.
    • Identify pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve learning, social, and attitude problems.
    • Promote satisfactory pupil progress and growth toward curriculum objectives
    • Group students for instructional purposes or activities so as to enhance pupil performance and provide for individual needs.
    • Perform other duties or responsibilities assigned by the building principal or central office administrators.
    Evaluation of Performance : Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the New Jersey Administrative Code and Board of Education Policy.

    Additional Responsibilities: Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as the principal or superintendent may assign or delegate.

    Computer Skills : Proficient in computer applications pertinent to support the position.
