Chemist I - Risk Management Job at Stolt-Nielsen

We have an opportunity for a talented Chemist to manage forensic investigations into quality and quantity disputes for hundreds of liquid cargoes and fuels that we store/transport. This role will require both technical knowledge of chemistry and effective communication abilities when liaising with operations, underwriters, customers, and internal/external legal support.
What you will be doing
The Chemist primarily works with three divisions (Stolt Tankers, Stolthaven Terminals, Stolt Tank Containers), as well as Underwriters/Insurance companies, Chemical manufacturers, etc. Chemist responsibility is to provide advice and support internally and externally on what are often high-pressure, contentious situations. In these situations, the Chemist is expected to investigate, liaise with surveyors and laboratories to establish the root cause of the allegation, review options for mitigation purposes and communicate with all relevant parties. Complementary investigations may require laboratory analysis using standard test methods and forensic analytical techniques. All findings are compiled into a technical report for internal and external review. Additionally, the Chemist is responsible for providing technical input on various Operational strategies pertaining to the chemical nature of the products.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
• Attendance on board ships and in terminals to carry out forensics investigations.
• Collaborate with key parties to collect pertinent information for the complaint, issue and/or incident.
• Appoint surveyor and select the laboratory and provide the analysis to be conducted.
• Apply practical and theoretical knowledge of chemistry to analyze the data/information.
• Track progress of claim and ensure status is communicated to all relevant parties.
• Create technical reports to defend the claim.
• Assess claims statistics for internal evaluation and implementation of structural improvements.
• Provide technical input for operational and logistical challenges.
Qualifications
- Education
• Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university, Chemistry degree required.
• Masters of Science preferred
- Experience
• At least 5 years of work experience in petrochemical laboratory experience. Proven ability in writing analytical reports.
- Skills
• Have expertise in designing testing protocol, witness and supervise analysis addressing quality complaints.
• Sound knowledge in testing to international methods (ASTM, ISO) and non-routine instrumental tests such as Gas Chromatography, Scanning Microscope Energy dispersive.
• Able to self-managed workloads and work as an effective team member with varied technical disciplines (engineers, Chief officers, terminal supervisors).
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills including technical writing skills are essential explaining to non-scientific colleagues.
• Able to safe guard information during exchanges of critical data.
• Fluency in Microsoft Windows based programs.
