Purpose and Scope of Job:


Repair & refurbishment (including mechanical, electrical, controls, hydraulic and pneumatic systems) of manual & CNC/PLC-based manufacturing & assembly equipment in a high-volume manufacturing environment. Improve machine repeatability and performance through a variety of assignments, including, but not limited to: machine teardown, diagnosis & repair, pipefitting, fabrication, welding, and electrical runs. Install, dismantle, or move machinery and heavy equipment according to layout plans, blueprints, or other drawings. Plan, coordinate & execute Maintenance programs (Preventive Maintenance / TPM) for machine tools and assembly equipment in SMA-VA. Team lead for the Maintenance/Facilities/Toolcrib team in SMA-VA.


Essential Functions (other duties may be assigned):


Complete diagnosis & repair of:

  • CNC and manual machines (vertical & horizontal milling machines, lathes, multitasking/mill-turn combination machines, boring machines, grinders, drills, gear cutting machines, broaches, facing/centering machines, bandsaws, plasma cutting machines, press brakes, welding equipment, media blasting equipment).
  • Assembly equipment (Cranes, Electrical testing panels, Air leak testers, Forklifts, PLC controlled dispensing equipment, Carousals, Paint/drying booths, scales & conveyor systems, Hydraulic presses, Parts washers, Ovens/Bearing heaters, Packaging machines), and
  • Other installations (Compressors, Overhead doors, etc).
  • Install, move, and align machines and equipment as needed, using the proper equipment.
  • Connect power/air/water lines to equipment, and test unit to evaluate its mechanical operation. Be a resource to Manufacturing Engineering for Capability studies and trial runs on new installations.
  • Using proper tools and measuring instruments, set specified clearances between moving and stationary parts.
  • Replace defective parts on machines or adjust clearances and alignment of moving parts.
  • Coordinate bigger installations with external riggers , Manufacturing Engineering & other departments as necessary.
  • Lead & manage Maintenance work request queue (using online work order system).
  • Distribute work orders to the team, ensure that work order status is updated periodically; and ensure timely close outs of the same with an emphasis on root cause detection and quality solutions.
  • Responsible for tracking performance (time/cost/quality) on all work orders.
  • Lead & maintain SMA’s Preventive Maintenance program for all manufacturing and assembly equipment in VA.
  • Plan, review and obtain permits (mechanical/electrical/fire suppression/emissions) for new construction / installations in SMA.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance of all safety and regulatory standards in SMA’s manufacturing & Assembly environment.
  • Manage all Asset/Equipment information in SMA’s standard documentation structures (asset lists, online document repositories, physical document libraries).
  • Identify areas of cost improvement in SMA’s management of Assets/Equipment, and work with Manufacturing Engineering on these areas.
  • Team lead for general upkeep of SMA’s VA facility/building and surroundings. Manage daily interaction with vendors for landscaping, HVAC, burglar/fire monitoring, building upkeep, pest control, etc).
  • Act as first responder for any emergencies in the plant (in the event of storms, burglar/fire alarms, emergency repair calls, etc). Act as “last man to leave” for plant lockouts during emergency evacuations.
  • Responsible (along with Manufacturing engineering) for the Overall Equipment Effectiveness in SMA’s Manufacturing & Assembly lines in VA.
  • Lead 5-S activities in the Maintenance & Facilities areas. Maintain a culture of 5-S in the workplace. Act as resource for 5-S activities in manufacturing & Assembly areas.
  • Champion a culture of continuous improvement in the assigned areas.
  • Maintain planned budget & expenses journals for Maintenance/Facilities in SMA-VA. Ensure compliance of all Accounting/Purchasing/IT procedures in the team.
  • Facilitate Preventive maintenance and repair work in regional facilities (IL, KY, CA).
  • Team lead for process improvement & standardization of all maintenance work in SMA.
  • Act as resource to other departments/regional facilities for any installation projects.
  • Train new hires in the department on all departmental procedures and activities.
  • Lead set up for company events (picnics, all hands meetings).


Minimum Qualifications:


  • High school diploma or equivalent; Associates degree or or equivalent experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience as a millwright, with at least 12 years experience in maintaining, troubleshooting & repairing manual & CNC manufacturing equipment.
  • Must have at least two of the following certifications: Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) Trade Certification / Master Electricians certification / Qualified Millwright card in the state of VA.
  • Ability to understand & interpret complex engineering & architectural drawings/blueprints.
  • Excellent grasp of Mechanical, Electrical, & Control systems in manufacturing equipment.
  • Good understanding of welding & fabrication, plumbing, & electric installations.
  • Excellent understanding of measurement systems and gauges.
  • Basic computer skills (understanding of MS excel, Word, PowerPoint; emails, searching for industrial solutions on the web).

Duties are performed in an industrial environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is constantly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; twist; bend; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is frequently required to walk. The employee must constantly lift, carry, move, push, and/or pull up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is constantly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The employee may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
