Brightpoint is a two-year, public institution of higher education and the fifth largest of the 23 community colleges in Virginia. Brightpoint Community College is seeking a Part-Time College Attainment for Parent Students (CAPS) Coach. This is a two-year grant funded position. The CAPS Coach will handle the program’s overall management with the specific goal of aiding student parents with academic success, degree completion, and career readiness. The CAPS Coach will connect a cohort of students with a wide range of support services including financial aid, enrollment, career development, tutoring, community support services and navigating the community college environment. The CAPS Coach has the following responsibilities:
  • Identify and recruit potential students and aid them with enrolling in the CAPS program and educational programs at the college.
  • Provide case management and holistic support, including academic and career advising and resource referrals to increase the likelihood of their persistence and completion.
  • Perform individual and small group sessions that focus on academic skills and personal success.
  • Coordinate with the Financial Aid department to ensure students access maximum financial aid and scholarship resources (application assistance, financial aid award review).
  • Working with the Academic Resource Center (ARC), coordinate a tutoring program for eligible participants.
  • Provide support services and referral assistance to students. Inform students of the services available through relevant institutions and agencies and act as an advocate and liaison for students eligible to participate in them.
  • Manage funds allocated to the program in support of eligible participants to include emergency funds.
  • Maintain proper documentation of all sessions and meetings with participants; compile data for required reports, maintain assessment and test results, identify best practices and effective strategies, submit reports in timely manner.
  • Gather outcomes data for parenting students to compile and report data to the college and funding sources.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.



KSA's/Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in a relevant field in Counseling, Education, Social Work, etc. very strongly preferred; Bachelor’s Degree strongly preferred. High School diploma or equivalent required. Demonstrated experience in working with single parents, proficiency with technology, excellent oral and written communication skills, the ability to collaborate and coordinate with state and private agencies and college departments required. Successful candidate must be willing to have a flexible work schedule to include working some evenings and weekends and traveling to meet student needs.

Preferred Qualifications
A Master’s degree in a relevant field in Counseling, Education, Social Work, etc. very strongly preferred; Bachelor’s Degree strongly preferred. Prior experience working in an educational setting strongly preferred.
