Overview
University of Utah Health is seeking a new, seasoned and experienced leader for our full-time Controller opportunity.
This leadership position provides planning, direction and coordination of the financial and accounting affairs of the organization in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Practices and University policies.
This position establishes and maintains the organization's accounting principles, practices and procedures and oversees the preparation and evaluation of budgets and other financial operating reports, and presents finding and recommendations to leadership management.
This is a system-wide leadership role that interfaces with all levels of organization including senior management, vice presidents, senior executives, directors, and facility managers. The position also interfaces with University of Utah’s Internal Audit Department, Legal Department, and external financial auditors.
This position has no responsibility for providing patient care.

Responsibilities
Job Specific Responsibilities and Accountabilities
- Performs to required standards for job specific responsibilities and technical competencies.
- Plans, directs and coordinates the financial and accounting affairs of the organization.
- Oversees the preparation of budgets, forecasting and other financial operating reports.
- Creates and provides findings and makes recommendations to hospital leadership.
- Establishes and maintains the organization’s accounting principles, practices, and procedures and develops internal control guidelines.
- Safeguards assets and assures accurate and timely recording of all transactions by implementing disciplines of intern audits, controls and checks across all departments.
- Prepares year-end schedules for audit and other regulatory agencies.
- Ensures compliance with state and federal regulatory requirements and professional standards.
Talent Management
- Hiring, training, developing, and communicating with staff.
Financial Management
- Responsible for developing, monitoring and achieving budget goals.
- Manages labor and non-labor expenses to budget or flex budget.
- Manages revenue to budget to maximize potential revenue.
EPE/Service
- Responsible for patient satisfaction scores within assigned area(s).
- Responsible for upholding PROMISE standards of direct reports and team members.
Quality
- Responsible to achieve quality goals for assigned area(s).
- Manages and promotes continuous process improvements in assigned area(s).
Performance Management
- Responsible to provide staff feedback on performance, including on-time appraisals and coaching.
- Responsible to deal with conflicts in a proactive manner and to reach resolution in a timely manner.
Building Relationships
- Forms positive relationships with staff, peers, and senior leadership to support the mission, vision, values, and performance standards of the organization.
- Actively engages staff with updates and news as well as involving staff in decisions and work teams. Provides feedback and recognition when appropriate.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
- Knowledge and experience of GAAP.
- Knowledge and experience of GASB.
- Experience with the preparation of audited financial reports and working with auditors.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and an approachable, executive presence.
- Ability to develop relations based on trust, confidence and respect with all members of the senior management team and Board.
- Strong, balanced technical financial skills with an operational orientation. Deep understanding not only of the financial dynamics of a business, but its operating dynamics as well. Highly analytical.
- Ability to work in a highly complex business environment, and a commitment to provide excellent customer service.
Qualifications
Qualifications Required
- Bachelor's degree in Business Management, Accounting or equivalency.
- Seven years of experience in finance or accounting; this includes a minimum of four years of managerial experience.
- Working knowledge of GASB.
Qualifications (Preferred)
Preferred
- Certified Public Accountant.
- Completed Master's Degree.
- Academic Medical Center (AMC) experience.
