SVCC is located in a rural setting of rolling hills, pine and hardwood forests, and farmland. The area is famous for its two lakes, Gaston and Kerr, and a multitude of state and national parks which offer recreational opportunities such as fishing, boating, skiing, jet-skiing, hiking, horseback riding, picnics, and relaxation. The area also offers sports arenas for baseball, softball, soccer and beautiful golf courses. There are cultural activities including various theaters and arts councils offering concerts, plays, and live entertainment, and there are many local festivals held throughout the year.

Southside Virginia Community College is seeking a dynamic individual to serve as the Campus Within Walls Coordinator. SVCC’s Campus Within Walls program provides second chances through higher education to incarcerated students. Through college education, Campus Within Walls provides our students with the tools they need to successfully re-enter society and become productive citizens.

Our Campus Within Walls program is an important facet of Southside Virginia Community College’s mission. We believe that all citizens should have educational opportunities and that includes incarcerated people in our service region. The goal of this program is to educate college-ready inmates, providing them with the opportunity to attain associate’s degrees and certificates while incarcerated. The result of this education is improvement of their chances for successful re-entry into society and the acquisition of meaningful employment.

The Coordinator of Campus Within Walls position provides leadership, administrative support, educational support services, fundraising/grant writing, and outreach/marketing for SVCC’s college programming; this position works with SVCC students incarcerated in correctional facilities served by SVCC .

Responsibilities include:
  • Coordinate all operational activities related to the Campus Within Wall (CWW) programs
  • Recruit enthusiastic full-time and adjunct instructors to provide exceptional student education and development to CWW students
  • Coordinate services representative to advise, register and enroll students
  • Support outreach and recruiting activities
  • Coordinate with the SVCC Business Office, Financial Aid Department, and Office of Institutional Advancement to arrange grant payments of student tuition
  • Ensures appropriate resources for students to include required books
  • Work with College and Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) personnel to schedule classes, testing, safety training, and CWW special programming
  • Work with internal and external constituents to increase community awareness of the CWW’s services and the College’s mission through personal contact, special events, and involvement at correctional facilities
  • Provide guidance to prospective and enrolled students to include application, program placement, financial aid, academic advising, and retention services
  • Provide accurate information to students and the general public about programs of study offered by the College at correctional facilities
  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the College’s admission process, registration, financial aid, academic advising, and policies and procedures, and advise students and staff of any changes, new requirements or existing deficiencies in those areas that promote student success and retention
  • Coordinate with college staff and students in attaining all needed transcripts including high school, GED, previous college credit and/or military
  • Assist with the submission of graduation applications
  • Assist students who are being released from prison with financial aid, transcripts, change of address forms, and program placement
  • Attend and participate in graduation events at correctional centers; involve appropriate College personnel in graduation events and other important events
  • Develop brochures, webpages, articles, videos, etc. to promote the CWW program
  • Work collaboratively with the VCCS and other regional colleges to support statewide coordination of higher education in prison
  • Market the College and coordinate all outreach activities at correctional centers to educate and recruit prospective students
  • Organize CWW fundraisers
  • Represent SVCC at community events and programs, conference presentations and organization involvement
  • Manage budgets and payments received appropriately and within College and state guidelines
  • Work with Academic Deans and faculty to create course schedules for fall, spring, and summer semesters
  • Work with the Director of Institutional Effectiveness, Research, and Planning to gather data on CWW students; create student satisfaction surveys; and distribute/collect course evaluations
  • Work to improve the services, courses, and overall program that CWW offers
  • Develop strong working relationships with correctional centers, the VDOC, and potential funders
  • Work with the College’s grants specialist and the Director of Institutional Advancement to secure grant funding for student tuition and CWW program support and growth
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in related field
  • Knowledge of admissions requirements, registration process, and guidelines, financial aid opportunities, and applicable federal guidelines
  • Ability to interact with clients and the public with a professional demeanor that promotes the college and its mission in a positive manner
  • Ability to effectively supervise and motivate staff to exceptional performance
  • Knowledge of basic marketing approaches and public relations principles
  • Ability to manage daily challenges
  • Must possess exceptional customer service-focused approach to interactions with students, VADOC personnel, faculty, parents/families, potential funders, agencies and the general public
  • Must have the ability to problem-solve to ensure productive management of the program
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with staff, students, internal and external constituents
  • Advanced computer and technical skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work independently
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical information to non-technical staff
  • Ability to work effectively with other people
  • Ability to be creative and exercise initiative
  • Ability to meet college deadlines
  • Ability to meet deadlines for federal and state reporting
  • Cultural competence, must be comfortable entering correctional centers and working with incarcerated men and women
  • Proficiency and experience working in MS-Office suite preferred
  • Valid drivers license and good driving record
  • Passing VADOC background screening required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional experience in PeopleSoft/SIS
  • Working experience in a community college, or other higher education setting
  • Working experience in a correctional center
