POSITION SUMMARY:
The Counselor position is responsible for providing substance abuse treatment counseling services and aftercare planning for assigned clients at the in-patient-based substance abuse treatment facility. This includes treatment needs assessment, individual counseling, treatment planning, case management, client advocacy, crisis intervention and coordination of family therapy services and community resources.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Ø Provides substance abuse and mental health counseling services to the in-patient treatment community
Ø Performs individual, family and group counseling sessions and participates in case conferences
Ø Assesses clients on a continuous basis to identify changing needs pertaining to the treatment strategy
Ø Collaborates with the Lead Counselor as needed to determine the client’s continuum of care
Ø Coordinates community activities and vocational training for the clients participation and completion
Ø Documents progress notes on regular basis, writes progress reports as required
Ø Facilitates referrals to appropriate internal and/or external resources when needed
Ø Effectively and efficiently manages caseload
Ø Participates in peer consultations, staff meetings and continuing education
Ø Assists with research and evaluation activities as required by PA Department of Health
Ø Maintains established performance and conduct standards in accordance with organizational expectations
Ø Performs all other duties as assigned
SPECIFIC EDUCATION OR EXPERIENCE:
Ø Required to be a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor certified by the Pennsylvania Certification Board or one of the following:
1. Current licensure in the Commonwealth as a physician.
SPECIFIC EDUCATION OR EXPERIENCE (Continued):
2. A Master’s Degree or above from an accredited college with a major in chemical dependency, psychology, social work, counseling nursing (with a clinical specialty in the human services) or other related field which includes a practicum in a health or human service agency, preferably in a drug and alcohol setting. If the practicum did not take place in a drug and alcohol setting, the individual’s written training plan shall specifically address a plan to achieve counseling competency in chemical dependency issues.
3. A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college above from an accredited college with a major in chemical dependency, psychology, social work, counseling nursing (with a clinical specialty in the human services) or other related field and 1 year of clinical experience (a minimum of 1,820 hours) in a health or human service agency, preferably in a drug and alcohol setting. If a person’s experience did not take place in a drug and alcohol setting, the individual’s written training plan shall specifically address a plan to achieve counseling competency in chemical dependency issues.
4. An Associate Degree from an accredited college above from an accredited college with a major in chemical dependency, psychology, social work, counseling nursing (with a clinical specialty in the human services) or other related field and 2 years of clinical experience (a minimum of 3,640 hours) in a health or human service agency, preferably in a drug and alcohol setting. If a person’s experience did not take place in a drug and alcohol setting, the individual’s written training plan shall specifically address a plan to achieve counseling competency in chemical dependency issues.
5. Current licensure in the Commonwealth as a registered nurse and a degree from an accredited school of nursing and 1 year of counseling experience (a minimum of 1,820 hours) in a health of human services agency, preferably in a drug and alcohol setting. If a person’s experience did not take place in a drug and alcohol setting, the individual’s written training plan shall specifically address a plan to achieve counseling competency in chemical dependency issues.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Ø Frequently sit, stand and walk
Ø Regularly required to talk or hear
Ø Frequently required to use hands or fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or controls
Ø Occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl
Ø Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
Ø Vision abilities to include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus
Ø The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
Ø Occasional moderate to high stress due to interactions with clients in crisis
Ø Temperature in the workplace is typically moderate
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
This position does not require any travel time.
