Position Summary:

The laboratory supervisor has operational responsibility to assure the processing of appropriate and quality patient diagnostics or research, tests and reporting of results for Laboratory Services at Bay Area PL Services (“BayPLS”). The supervisor is accountable to meet/establish standards of care through effective staffing, budgeting, monitoring and evaluation of policies, procedures and objectives. In addition to the leadership and management skills needed to meet these responsibilities, this position must develop the quality programs, compliance programs, safety programs, and communications programs needed to demonstrate that the laboratory is meeting all of these requirements. Responsibilities include identifying and implementing new programs and services in a dynamic market that exceeds patient and community expectations. The manager works in collaboration with other departments, managers, administration, patients and other members of medical staff, administrative staff to meet strategic objectives.

Demonstrated increasing level of responsibility in management of multiple clinical service programs. Budgeting and financial planning experience that includes the utilization of productivity measurement tools, capital equipment allocation, reimbursement methods and physical space planning. Familiar with various approaches to patient diagnostic testing methods and the application of relevant clinical concepts. Knowledgeable about health care regulations, Clinical Standards of Practice, CLIA, FDA, CAP and federal, state and local requirements. Prior experience building physician partnerships in a multi-disciplinary environment.Program/service implementation and evaluation experience in a dynamic market.

Must be able to document and report on technical or analytic process issues using a complete, clear and pertinent summary of observations or findings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day supervision of laboratory personnel.
  • Be responsible for the daily operations of the laboratory including but not limited to scheduling, independently troubleshooting and resolving technical and non-technical high complexity problems that adversely affect test performance.
  • Perform administrative duties including but not limited to writing employee performance evaluations and reviewing SOPs, Work Instructions, protocols, training forms, QC forms, and equipment maintenance forms.
  • Perform annual review of Standard Operating Procedures and Work instructions.
  • Coach and mentor Laboratory Associates including but not limited to providing guidance and constructive feedback and assisting with the development of the troubleshooting and judgment skills of Laboratory Associates.
  • Manage the testing and validation of new procedures and laboratory equipment
  • Perform laboratory tests, procedures, and analyses according to the laboratory's standard operating procedures as needed.
  • Review, interpret, and report patient results as needed.
  • Perform, review and document laboratory quality control procedures, as needed.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, as needed.
  • Assist with the training of new laboratory personnel and training of new procedures with existing personnel.
  • Participate in internal and external inspection preparation activities.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities.
  • Effectively communicate technical information to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Maintain stringent standards for quality, identifying any issues which might adversely impact the quality of test results and/or employee safety, and communicating these to the appropriate management representatives as necessary for resolution.
  • Report all concerns of test quality and/or safety to the Supervisor or Safety Officer.
  • Able to integrate and apply feedback in a professional manner.
  • Able to prioritize and drive to results with a high emphasis on quality.
  • Rotate Manager on call
  • Obtain Clearance for Forensics for San Mateo and San Francisco
  • Coordinate schedules and orientation & training for CPT staff
  • Predict labor and supply budget for mobile phlebotomists
  • Innovative thinking as it relates to new product launches with the CPT team
  • Assist in software launches, deployment and upkeep
  • Manage inventory/ordering of blood products and supplies

Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of local, state, and federal laboratory regulations.
  • A minimum of Four years of Clinical Laboratory experience required, 6 years preferred.
  • At least two years of supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Outstanding professionalism, leadership, and communications skills.
  • Strong communicator with ability to maintain open communication with internal employees, managers and customers as needed.
  • Proactively communicate consistently, clearly, and honestly.
  • Ability to provide direct supervision to laboratory personnel

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • Hours and days may vary depending on operational needs. Generally Mon-Fri with rotating weekend coverage
  • Standing or sitting for long periods of time may be necessary.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials, blood specimens and instruments with moving parts, heating or freezing elements, and high speed centrifugation (Generally laboratory and Customer Services employees only).
  • Repetitive manual pipetting may be necessary.
  • Some lifting (up to 40 pounds) may be necessary.
