DESCRIPTION
Serves as the technical expert on the data modeling and data content for various clinical data sources, including but not limited to the Shiley Eye Institute glaucoma service at UCSD. Responsible for specifications of data exports from clinical databases and image modalities into various research applications; Responsible for development of SQL and supporting scripts. Attention to optimization is necessary given the complexity and diversity of these databases. Design computer code for improving software and applications. Working with various ophthalmology imaging devices, DICOM, raw file, etc and integrating the data for research projects.
Familiar with basics in coding in image processing and applications of the algorithms on the images. Develops and optimizes a variety of computational, data science, and CI research tools and components. Demonstrate experience in implementing, and tuning the scrips for conventional machine learning algorithms. Other activities include participation in planning and writing grant proposals and scientific journal papers, and providing training to other lab personnel. Applies skills as a seasoned, experienced IT research professional.
Uses computational, computer science, data science, and clinical informatics CI software research and development principles, with relevant domain science knowledge where applicable, along with professional programming concepts for medium-sized projects or portions of larger projects. Familiar with basics in image processing. Develops and optimizes a variety of computational, data science, and CI research tools and components. Performs research on current and future HPC, data, and CI technologies, hardware and software projects. Works on algorithm development, optimization, programming, performance analysis and / or benchmarking assignments of moderate scope where the tasks involve knowledge of either domain / computer science research requirements and / or CI design / implementation requirements.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Seven (7) years of related experience, education/training, OR an Bachelor’s degree in related area plus three (3) years of related experience/training.
Intermediate knowledge of HPC / data science / CI.
Advanced skills, and demonstrated experience associated with one or more of the following: HPC hardware and software power and performance analysis and research, design, modification, Implementation and deployment of HPC or data science or CI applications and tools.
Demonstrated ability to regularly interface with management.
Demonstrated ability to contribute research and technical content to grant proposals.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization and to external research and education audiences.
Proven skills and experience in independently resolving broad computing / data / CI problems using introductory and / or intermediate principles.
Thorough experience working in a complex computing / data / CI environment encompassing all or some of the following: HPC, data science infrastructure and tools / software, and diverse domain science application base.
Proven ability to understand research computing / data / CI needs, mapping use cases to requirements and how systems / software / infrastructure can support those needs and meet the requirements. Ability to develop and implement such solutions.
Broad experience in one or more of the following: optimizing, benchmarking, HPC performance and power modeling, analyzing hardware, software, and applications for HPC / data / CI.
Proven experience and ability to collaborate effectively with all levels of staff; technical, students, faculty and administrators
Advanced experience in SQL, specifically T-SQL with the ability to perform complex joins and write aggregation queries. Ability to write complex and efficient SQL scripts and procedures, including use of system and local variables, cursors, and error handling code.
Expert knowledge and experience in relational databases, database modeling, E-R diagrams, object-oriented systems, UML, and software engineering Experience wording with and writing code for XML.
Expertise in designing and implementing data warehouses and databases containing large numbers of records. Must know star-join schema. Must have the skills to create ETL scripts.
Advanced facility with computer system terminology and the ability to quickly absorb and interpret computer technical documentation. Proven understanding of computer internal architecture and design.
Understanding of concepts in statistics such as summary statistics, distributions, and biases. Experience in statistical modeling and machine learning.
Exceptional analytic, inductive, and deductive reasoning skills. Proven technical leadership and team orientation.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's degree in a related area.
- Knowledge of management concepts for directing a small team of employees is desirable.
- Experience working with healthcare or biomedical research data is highly desirable. Understanding of HIPAA and other privacy regulations is desirable.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $63,400 - $142,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $30.36 - $68.39
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
Job offer is contingent on successful engagement in the UC COVID-19 Vaccination program (fully vaccinated with documented proof or approved exception/deferral).
