POSITION SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the General Dentist, this position is responsible to prepare the patient for the treatment, assist the Dentist in performing their treatment, prepare materials and equipment for treatment and have them ready for the Dentist’s use, take radiographs, assist the Dentist in laboratory work, ordering supplies, sterilizing and cleaning dental equipment/operatory/laboratory in accordance with infection control. May perform other related work to include, but not limited to, making appointments, answering the phone, communicating with dental labs and assisting with the dental billing.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi reserves the right to change, amend, add, delete and otherwise assign any and all duties, responsibilities and position titles as it deems necessary to meet the needs of the government.
  • Greet patients in waiting area and escorts patients to and from the operatory.
  • Assist the Dentist in the administration of treatment at the chair side as required or directed by the Dentist.
  • Promote an atmosphere supportive of good dental and general health by demonstrating good oral hygiene, questioning patients to ascertain home care status, instructing patients in techniques of flossing and brushing in accordance with protocol.
  • Maintain a sterile and neat working environment according to current infection control procedures.
  • Review the health history, make chart entries under the direction of the operator and assure completion of forms and signatures.
  • Assume the responsibility associated with any expanded duties that may be delegated by the Dentist.
  • Familiarize the patient with the aspects of their dental visit and provide support and compassion to that patient when it is needed.
  • Stock operatories and maintain clinical supply inventory.
  • Communicate and work with dental laboratories to ensure treatment cases are on schedule.
  • Review daily schedule to set up appropriate trays and instruments.
  • Assist in front office procedures if time allows or need is determined by the Dentist.
  • Supervise preventive maintenance of dental equipment.
  • Serve as supply liaison. Communicates with purchasing department and vendors to assure prompt receipt of all orders.
  • Conserve dental resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Contribute to a solutions based, positive team environment.
  • Participate in dental team and health and human services departmental meetings.
  • Attend regular Continued Education courses for Michigan license renewal.
  • May perform the following procedures based on their Level of Supervision:
    • Trail sixing of orthodontic bands
    • Holding the matrix for anterior resin restorations
    • Making impressions for study and opposing models
    • Applying topical anesthetic solutions
    • Instructing in the use and care of dental appliances
    • Operating dental radiographic equipment
    • Removing orthodontic elastics, ligatures, and elastic or wire separators
    • Replacing elastic or wire separators
    • Placing and removing rubber dam
    • Removing excess cement from supragingival surfaces of a tooth with a non-tissue cutting instrument
    • Polishing specific teeth with a slow-speed rotary hand piece immediately before a procedure that would require acid etching before placement of sealants, resin-bonded orthodontic appliances, and direct restorations
    • Applying anticariogenic agents including, but not limited to, sealants, fluoride, varnish, and fluoride application
    • Applying desensitizing agents*
    • Polishing and contouring of sealants with a slow-speed rotary hand piece immediately following the procedure for the purpose of occlusal adjustment
    • Inspecting and charting of the oral cavity using a mouth mirror and radiographs
    • Replacing existing temporary restorations and existing temporary crowns and temporary bridges
    • Classifying occlusion
    • Providing nutritional counseling for oral health and maintenance
    • Applying commonly accepted emergency procedures
    • Placing and removing a nonmetallic temporary restoration with a non-tissue cutting instruments
    • Sizing of temporary crowns and bands
    • Performing pulp vitality testing*
    • Placing and removing matrices and wedges*
    • Applying cavity liners and bases*
    • Placing and removing non-epinephrine retraction cords*
    • Taking impression for orthodontic appliances, mouth guards, bite splints, and bleaching trays*
    • Drying endodontic canals with absorbent points*
    • Etching and placing adhesives before placement of orthodontic brackets*
    • Placing and removing periodontal dressings
    • Temporarily cementing and removing temporary crowns and bands
    • Removing sutures
    • Applying in-office bleaching
    • Cementing orthodontic bands or initial placement of orthodontic brackets
    • Removing orthodontic adhesive from teeth, supragingivally, after removing brackets with non-tissue cutting instruments
    • Placing, condensing, and carving amalgam restorations**
    • Placing Class I resin bonded restorations, occlusal adjustment, finishing and polishing with non-tissue cutting rotary hand pieces**
    • Taking of final impressions for indirect restorations**
    • Assisting and monitoring of the administration of nitrous oxide analgesia by the dentist or the RDH***
  • Completed approved course as defined in section 16611 (12) and (13) of the code, MCL 333.16611(12) and (13)
**Completed approved course as defined in section 16611 (11) of the act, followed by a comprehensive clinical experience of sufficient duration that validates clinical competence through a criterion-based assessment instrumentation
***Completed approved course as defined in section 16611 (7) of the act, in the assisting and monitoring of the administration of nitrous oxide analgesia.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
An applicant’s education, training and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate that the applicant possesses the ability to successfully perform each of the essential functions.
The requirements listed below are generally representative of the education, experience, and skills and/or ability required to enable one to successfully perform the essential functions associated with his position:
  • Associates Degree in Dental Assisting from an ADA Accredited Dental Assisting program.
  • Active Michigan Dental Assistant license.
  • Must earn continued education credits and maintain license.
  • 2 years’ experience as a Dental Assistant or Registered Dental Assistant.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of dental health education subjects.
  • Ability to complete forms in an orderly and accurate fashion.
  • Willingness to work evenings and/or weekends.
  • Willingness to participate in community events such as health fairs, etc.
  • Able to understand, gain knowledge and appreciate the difference of Native American culture and customs.
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license with good driving record; GSA certifiable.
  • Must be able to travel.
  • Must be able to successfully complete and pass a comprehensive background investigation and drug screening; must not have been found guilty of, or pled guilty or no contest to, any felony or misdemeanor offense under federal, state or Tribal law involving crimes of violence, sexual assault, molestation, prostitution, or other crimes against persons, or offenses committed against children; must be able to successfully pass a drug screening.
  • Ability to become CPR/First Aid certified as training is available
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality, including HIPAA requirements.
  • Excellent interpersonal/human relation skills.
  • Must possess strong administrative, organizational, and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Demonstrated exceptional computer skills, including word processing and spreadsheets, and knowledge of other office equipment required.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
  • Five years of experience as a Registered Dental Assistant.
  • Working knowledge of the Dentrix Software.
