The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building, maintaining and operating the state’s roads, bridges, tunnels and ferries. Through the Commonwealth Transportation Board, it also provides funding for airports, rail, and public transportation. Virginia has the third largest state-maintained highway system in the country covering 58,321 miles of interstate, primary, secondary and frontage roads. VDOT has about 7,500 employees making it one of the largest state agencies in Virginia delivering a program that exceeds $5 Billion.

VDOT is seeking a highly qualified, senior level executive with proven experience in managing the full scope of a large-scale transportation construction and maintenance program to serve as the Deputy District Administrator/Engineer in the Richmond District. Based in South Chesterfield, the Richmond District consists of 14 counties (Amelia, Brunswick, Charles City, Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, New Kent, Nottoway, Powhatan and Prince George), four cities (Colonial Heights, Hopewell, Petersburg, and Richmond) and 15 towns. The district is responsible for approximately 18,000 miles of road in Central Virginia making it VDOT’s largest roadway network for a District. Approximately 880 employees work within the Richmond District, which includes four Residency Offices and 27 Area Headquarters. The Richmond District has road and bridge toll facilities geographically located within it and is home to two Metropolitan Planning Organizations. With a $750 million construction, maintenance and operations program, the Richmond District is at the heart of the Commonwealth representing both urban and rural environments.

Minimum Qualifications
Comprehensive senior level management knowledge of transportation operations including federal and state highway regulations, policies and practices; environmental stewardship; business functions; highway and transportation related engineering principles and practices; engineering construction and maintenance management operations; and financial management. Proven track record of managing and motivating employees; building integrity and trust through effective communications. Quality business decision making in the delivery of business driven objectives. Successful candidates will be able to build consensus and develop solutions to complex situations by effectively understanding the interrelationship of key business, government, economic and social issues, trends and events that affect transportation organizations and have the ability to adjust rapidly to new situations, maintain focus on the most important issues and be able to drive self and others to excellence and results while employing professionalism and accountability.

Preferred Qualifications
Advance degree in Engineering, Public Administration or related field. Progressive executive leadership experience with responsibility for a variety of highway transportation related business units consisting of diverse functions. Experience in multi-modal operations. Knowledge of congestion management programs and strategies. Professional Engineer licensure is preferred.

This position requires the completion of the Financial Statement of Economic Interest form upon employment. Fingerprint based background check, references, work history, and DMV records will be verified prior to employment. Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
