We have an exciting opportunity for a Digital Storyteller to join our team at Bright Black. This role will help take our digital media strategy to the next level and will support our mission to honor the beauty and brilliance of Blackness.
About Us
Bright Black uses scent to share positive stories about Blackness. We are a small, passionate, hard-working, fun team based in Durham, NC. In just a few years, Bright Black has collaborated with numerous partners, including the NBA, Michelle Obama and Jordan Peele/HBO, and has been featured in over 70 media outlets including Beyonce’s Black Parade, Vogue, People, NPR and Durham Magazine.
The Job
We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced candidate with a passion for storytelling, cultivating conversations and community building. Someone with proven success in creating innovative and engaging content, honing a brand’s voice, and creatively driving user-centric digital experiences would thrive in this position. The ideal candidate is knowledgeable about Black history, culture, current events, and trends, is an exceptional communicator and is excited by the idea of working with a small, tight knit team. The Digital Storyteller will assist the company in content creation, social media presence, email marketing and exceeding marketing goals.
In this role, you’ll be accountable for building brand awareness, engagement, and community across current and emerging social and digital channels, brightblackcandles.com, email newsletters, and other editorial platforms. This role is critical to ensuring that our content is driving growth for the company and for the communities we serve.
Your Responsibilities
- Assist in developing and executing social media strategies to advance Bright Black’s social media presence
- Work with the Bright Black team to develop and maintain a content calendar
- Engage with and build the Bright Black community through all existing Bright Black social media accounts
- Create and build Bright Black social media accounts on new platforms
- Carry out compelling digital marketing campaigns, including copywriting, content creation, design, filming, and editing
- Get company verified on key Social platforms
- Manage day-to-day social media platforms (including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, TikTok, LinkedIn, Discord and other emerging platforms)
- Write, edit, publish and share high-quality and engaging daily content that builds meaningful connections and encourages community members to take action
- Work to ensure the consistent use of brand identity and messaging across Bright Black
- Identify real-time digital and cultural trends to inform social media strategy
- Report on content performance with appropriate KPIs and social metrics, and use learnings to suggest ways to refine digital marketing strategy in collaboration with the Bright Black CEO
- Prepare regular reports measuring channel and campaign performance for social media and email
- Write and edit articles, press releases/advisories and op-eds and engage in media outreach
- Build relationships with community members and media outlets
- Other activities as requested and agreed to
Who We’re Looking For
- 2+ years in content creation role and/or BA in marketing, digital media and/or communications
- Familiarity with small business dynamics, a plus
- Strong writing and editing skills, with good storytelling instincts
- Good video editing and photography skills
- Deep passion and interest in Black culture, history and trends
- Alignment with Bright Black mission, vision, and values
- Excellent communication and listening skills
- Ability to maintain brand voice
- Experience with email marketing platforms like Omnisend and Mailchimp
- A proactive, highly organized, self-motivated work ethic, with a willingness to learn
- Enthusiasm, creativity, patience, forward-thinking, solutions-oriented, professional, dependable and flexible in their work
- Possess a strong knowledge of a wide variety of social media platforms such as: Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, WhatsApp, Twitter, Quora, Discord and emerging platforms
- Adherence to the highest standards of integrity
- Strong people skills, emotional intelligence, and ability to work well with others
- Insights into the latest trends and best practices in digital marketing
- Experience crafting, publishing and scheduling content in all major social media platforms (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc), with digital analytics tools a plus
- Someone who is able to capture content on-site at Bright Black (located in Durham, NC)
- Someone able to perform phone calls on the company’s behalf
- Someone able to to work in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing during the work day
- A U.S. citizen or permanent resident who is able to legally work in the U.S.
- Good graphic design and layout experience (Canva, Adobe Express, etc.), a plus
- Good knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), a plus

Employment Type
- This position is part-time (15-25 hours per week), but may evolve into a full-time role in the future. Specific hours will be determined in partnership with the chosen candidate based on both parties’ needs.
