The Director - Privacy is a crucial asset to Sentry's Information Security team. This role works to develop, implement, and direct the organization's privacy program, covering the use, disclosure, access to and destruction of confidential or personally identifiable information.

This position works on a hybrid-basis out of our Stevens Point, WI corporate office. A relocation bonus may be provided.

What You'll Do

  • Develops short-term and long-term business strategies. Leverages team and partnerships to execute strategic plans and objectives, ensuring alignment with business needs. Acts as a strategic partner and collaborates extensively with multiple business areas to direct, prepare, and/or review privacy operations.

  • Establishes vision and requirements for procedures and processes to effectively manage privacy activities, while ensuring compliance with regulations. These procedures and processes are implemented and maintained by the privacy team, which the director has ultimate accountability for. As part of this, the director determines best practice alignment goals and direction in support of regulatory and customer requirements.

  • Establishes and maintains strong relationships with business stakeholders across the organization to convey privacy requirements and maintain knowledge on data collection and use cases. Identifies and manages implementation of process and system modifications for data handling, ensuring alignment with external regulations and internal policies.

  • Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to evaluate and drive a privacy plan that maximizes value and minimizes risk. Develops and manages data governance structures, ensuring technologies maintain privacy protection for the use, collection, and disclosure of personal information.

  • Advises IT and Security development teams on system fixes, modifications, and enhancements to conform to privacy- by-design principles and meet business needs.

  • Partners with GRC management in leading the development, implementation, and ongoing compliance monitoring of external vendors and third-parties, to ensure appropriate controls are in place to protect personally identifiable information and address all privacy concerns, requirements, and responsibilities.

  • Monitors and advises stakeholders across the organization on changes to state and federal privacy laws and accreditation standards to ensure impacted areas are aware of pending changes and possible impacts to the business. Monitors and manages implementation of modifications to privacy technologies to ensure proper adoption across the organization.

  • Directs various privacy projects that involve researching, interpreting, summarizing and communicating with various departments within the company and numerous outside sources.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Provides recommendations to the Information Governance Steering Committee, ensuring consistent application of sanctions for failure to comply with privacy and information security policies by employees, contractors and vendors.

  • Administers human resource-related activities including timely performance and salary reviews and ensures all subordinates adhere to human resources policies and practices. Selects, develops, motivates, and recognizes staff.

  • Collaborates with security management on the refinement of the breach/security incident response plan, and assists with the resolution associated with such breaches, as necessary.

  • Performs initial and periodic privacy impact and information privacy risk assessments on the organization to ensure the protection of all personally identifiable information and adherence to privacy regulations.

  • Identifies training opportunities and works with Corporate personnel to develop or modify existing training programs and materials, ensuring associates and third parties receive proper privacy related training.

  • Controls expenses to contribute to the overall goals of the department.

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned from time to time.

What It Takes

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience

  • Minimum 10 years related work experience

  • Professional designations/certifications highly preferred, specifically CIPP/US, CIPM, CISSP, CISA, or CISM

  • High level of credibility, with an accomplished background in privacy, preferably in environments with similar complexity and regulatory profiles to Sentry Insurance, spanning the financial services and insurance industries.

  • Ability to build and develop the appropriate team that delivers on key objectives and navigates the privacy landscape. Builds constructive relationships with diverse groups of people, including internal and external stakeholders in order to gain buy-in for the program and support for execution and delivery.

  • Proven experience influencing and clearly communicating privacy requirements and risk. Strong communication, human relation, organizational, and analytical skills.

  • Ability to communicate privacy-related concepts to a broad range of technical and non-technical staff. Demonstrated experience planning, developing, and implementing large projects.

  • Associates must have the ability to travel as necessary to satisfactorily complete their job responsibilities as assigned.
