Short job description

The education specialist at Hardware Wildlife Education Center will conduct outdoor field trips in the fall, winter and spring for Cache, Logan and Box Elder school districts. Field trips will be held at the Hardware WMA, in Logan Canyon and at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge. Education specialists will be responsible for all visitor services, education and interpretive services during the winter sleigh ride season at the Hardware WMA education center.

Job duties

Successful applicants will:

  • Teach field trip activities up to six hours per day.
  • Perform all aspects of classroom management.
  • Work with teachers to provide a safe outdoor learning environment.
  • Staff the front desk of busy visitor center.
  • Sell sleigh ride tickets, operate the cash register, handle cash, make change and perform the daily cash reconciliation.
  • Answer and return phone calls.
  • Interact in person with visitors, answering questions and occasionally providing interpretation for sleigh rides.
  • Completing nightly cleaning tasks.
  • Developing and delivering short educational programs for the winter season that will be offered daily to visitors.

Job requirements and skills

  • Working toward a degree in natural resources, education, interpretation or recreation resource management
  • A basic understanding of wildlife, wildlife biology and education.
  • The ability to read and interpret lesson plans and translate those into fun, engaging field trip activities for fourth grade students.
  • An understanding of outdoor classroom management and instructional methods.
  • The ability to work with classroom teachers to provide quality hands-on outdoor instruction.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in front-desk management and cash register ticket sales.
  • The ability to troubleshoot, think quickly on your feet and stay organized.
  • The ability to count, use a calculator, find accounting errors and account for all cash handled accurately and quickly.

Preference may be given to an applicant seeking a B.S. degree or other degree.

Other

This position is part-time and intermittent (subject to furlough) with the potential for rehiring next year. Applicants must be available to work all Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from December 2022 to February 2022. (This is negotiable, depending on candidates’ qualifications.)

The schedule also requires you to work the following days (schedule may change):

  • September: 12–16, 19–23 and other days in September (TBD; at least 3)
  • October: All Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and some Saturdays (may be less)
  • November: 2–3 days a week; limited and TBD
  • December–Mid-February: All Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays
  • Middle–End of February: Off
  • March: 2–3 days a week; limited and TBD
  • April: All Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and some Saturdays (may be less)
  • May: All Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and some Saturdays (may be less)

Hardware WMA is a 30-minute drive from the town of Hyrum, up Blacksmith Fork Canyon. Winter-weather and wildlife driving conditions exist. Carpool opportunities may be available on some days, but not all days. Work is a combination of indoor and outdoor tasks, in all weather conditions.

Work requires the ability to stand, walk over rough surfaces, bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach and lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time. Incumbent must be able to work in extreme and adverse weather conditions (heat, wind, snow, ice, rain, etc.) work in cold water, on slippery surfaces and in cramped areas.
