Energy Justice Statewide Coordinator Job at Native Movement
Native Movement seeks a highly motivated candidate to advance energy justice infrastructure and cooperatives across Alaska, including renewable energy infrastructure. Research and assessment of Alaska’s current energy justice landscape will be a part of the first year of this position, including a gap-analysis in order to better determine Native Movement’s energy justice priority focuses. This position will coordinate key community leaders, organizations, and coalitions, as well as organize community engagement on key campaigns. This position will work closely with Native Movement’s Policy Justice Lead to navigate relevant federal and state policies, such as the Inflation Reduction Act, in order to engage Alaskans on energy justice needs. The coordinator will work collaboratively within various relevant state-wide coalitions in order to further Native Movement’s energy justice priorities. The position will identify and build relationships with rural Alaska communities to support renewable energy and energy justice projects. This position will collaborate with Native Movement’s Environmental Justice team or other teams when relevant.
Native Movement provides greater than average Paid Time Off (PTO), including “Harvest” and “Ceremony/Spiritual” leave and ample paid holidays. Additionally, Native Movement’s standard work week is four days – Monday through Thursday – while Fridays are paid “wellness” days. Primary Responsibilities:
Actively engage and support frontline community members and advocates interested in advancing energy justice, creating points of entry and leadership development opportunities for volunteers
Identify gaps and needs in communities’ just transition to renewable energy, and practice creative problem-solving to help overcome regulatory and political challenges
Collaborate with Native Movement’s Communications team and partners to build resources for navigating the Inflation Reduction Act and other federal infrastructure funding
Work on campaigns, narrative development, and events in coalition with the Alaska Climate Alliance, its Indigenous Navigating Council, and the Alaska Railbelt Energy Coalition
Contribute to broadening Native Movement’s contacts and volunteer base
Support the Climate Justice team by reporting achievements
Potentially support grassroots-led action in opposition to energy injustice in cooperation with the Environmental Justice team
Plan and host volunteer events, community gatherings, 1-1 meetings, and gatherings
Participate in Native Movement staff gatherings in-person, when needed
Required qualifications:
Proven history of positive teamwork and engagement with diverse communities
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong time-management skills and ability to meet goals and deadlines while working independently
Adept at social media & web-based tools (Google Drive, Zoom, Slack, etc)
Flexible, adaptable, and growth-oriented
Access to reliable internet, especially if working outside of Anchorage or Fairbanks
Preferred qualifications:
Demonstrated knowledge and/or relevant experience in community organizing and coordination
Understanding or experience with the concepts of climate justice, environmental justice, and social justice
Demonstrated understanding of energy justice, Alaska’s unique electric grid and heating systems, and the impacts of energy production on community health
An understanding of Alaska Native history, politics, and cultural values
An understanding of policy interventions and policy creation

Committed to addressing root causes of inequity while building grassroots movements for justice
