Engineer - Water Services Job at Shelby County, AL
Work involves directly assisting management through the performance of technical and administrative duties, and designing, planning, supervising and inspecting various drinking water and related projects. Work is directly involved with insuring County compliance with associated water industry regulations.
- Designs, reviews, coordinates, and performs inspections for capital projects.
- Reviews plans for subdivision and commercial development regarding water services and interfaces with developers, engineers, contractors, and customers.
- Provides inspection services for developer projects within the system along with the Engineering Assistant assigned to inspections.
- Coordinates with the Engineering Assistants to stay abreast of activity within the system.
- Provides technical support to field and office staff and works closely with consulting engineers.
- Assists with maintaining current maps of installed infrastructure.
- Stays abreast of current and proposed State and Federal Drinking Water regulations and related regulatory matters.
- Assists with hydraulic analysis of water system and maintenance of the computer hydraulic model.
- Reviews Monthly Operations Reports and chemical monitoring results for the water treatment plants and the distribution system as needed. Assists with water quality sampling.
- Assists in producing the annual Consumer Confidence Report, backflow prevention program, emergency response plan, and any other regulatory report as needed.
- Assists a technical and administrative capacity for special projects and bidding purposes.
- Assists with the annual project and budget planning as needed.
- Performs all duties in a safe and efficient manner.
- Performs all other duties as assigned by supervision.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from accredited 4-year university and knowledge level of competency commonly associated therewith.
- Ability to obtain certification as an Engineer-in-Training by the State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors in the State of Alabama.
- Willing to work nonstandard hours and/or days and more than 40 hour per week.
- Valid driver's license.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
- College course work emphasis on water treatment and distribution systems or experience working within a water utility.
- Certification as Engineer-in-Training by the State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors in the State of Alabama. Continued employment will be contingent upon the employee obtaining EIT Certification within 12 months of employment.
- Experience with AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or Arc GIS software.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS Work is performed in the field and office. Work requires the ability to travel on varying terrain, around equipment or confined spaces. Field/site work assignments involve prolonged walking, standing, climbing and driving.
WORK ENVIRONMENT Approximately 50% work is performed indoors in an office environment and 50% of work is performed outdoors at job sites with exposure to extreme weather conditions.
