Job Summary
Under the direction of the Chief Engineering Inspector and City Engineer, the Engineering Inspector is responsible for performing engineering inspections of public works and private projects to ensure compliance with approved plans and specifications. Work is performed independently and requires technical discretion and judgment. Responsibilities include engineering inspections of new home developments, roads, and utility infrastructure. Work is reviewed through observation and written reports for adherence to established policies and procedures.
Examples of Essential Functions
- Inspects streets, drainage systems, waterways, underground utilities, parking areas, sidewalks, and municipal facilities; ensures conformance with approved plans and specifications; checks materials used.
- Prepares inspection reports; maintains inspection logs; checks existing permits.
- Assists with water and wastewater line breaks; locates valves and mains during extreme emergencies.
- Witnesses pressure testing of force and water mains; witnesses’ chlorination of water lines, and the collection of bacteriological water samples.
- Determines alignment, grade and compaction of fill; orders field and laboratory tests; performs field measurements; prepares and maintains related records, reports, and inspections.
- Answers telephone or in-person inquiries regarding inspections and code compliance; investigates and resolves complaints.
- Confers with and advises the general public, City departments, and contractors concerning problems associated with construction projects.
- Investigates complaints relating to flooding sidewalks, encroachments to the public right-of-way and poor road conditions.
- Monitors City and private construction projects
Requirements
Training and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED; supplemented by two (2) years’ experience in an engineering related field. Must be certified as an Engineering Inspector or Engineering Contractor by the Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
- Knowledge of the terminology, techniques, and practices used in various types of construction and of the stages in the construction process when defects may be observed or corrected.
- Knowledge of possible defects in construction materials and of effective corrective measures.
- Knowledge of the types of tests performed on construction materials and their application.
- Knowledge of the codes, regulations and specifications relating to public works construction.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications and to recognize deviations from such plans in the construction process.
- Knowledge of the basic principles, practices and methods of Civil Engineering.
- Knowledge of modern developments, current literature and sources of information in the field of utilities inspection and construction.
- Ability to perform complex mathematical calculations.
- Ability to make technical inspections and to enforce regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, contractors and the public.
- Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
