POSITION SUMMARY: Financial Coordinators provide patients with assistance regarding the application and eligibility process for MassHealth and Health Connector insurances, billing inquiries and estimates. Financial Coordinators act as an advocate for patients, who may require access to Infirmary sponsored discount programs, negotiates, collects and executes promissory notes and posts collected monies resulting from payments for self pay admissions or front end fees for surgeries. Completes various reports ensuring insurance accuracy, surgical copay collection and cosmetic fee collection and communicates any inconsistencies found and propose resolution. Maintains accurate files and records for MassHealth audits and related to all duties defined.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Communicates in a professional and courteous manner to patients inquiring about their bills, payments, insurance, financial assistance applications, insurance coverage, finances and fees due prior to surgery. Counsels patients relating to financial disposition and eligibility for assistance from third parties.

Accepts and prepares receipts for patient/guarantors for deposits, co-payments, deductible and self-pay payments for services and treatments. Estimates and collects fees as prescribed by department and Infirmary policies. Completes payment posting sheets and reconciles daily deposits.

Maintains log of MassHealth applications, completes award/denial letters and forwards to patient in a timely manner. Assists with audit of records.

Arranges payment schedule with patients prior to admission when insurance coverage is insufficient to cover charges. Recommends admissions for deferral due to financial considerations.

Processes surgery estimates for patients which include but is not limited to: obtains information relevant to the surgery from the physician’s office, calculates and prepares written estimate, as well as the amount of the deposit expected when admitted, forwards information to the patient.

Must keep abreast of changes in regulations, third party payors and Infirmary policies regarding patient accounts by reading journals, articles and internal procedures manual. Ensures that the quality and quantity standards regarding production are adhered to. Reports trends or consistent errors to Manager. Recommends resolutions to problems as is appropriate.

Performs clerical support tasks to accomplish overall duties such as data entry into billing system, producing reports, typing correspondence, notes, memos, filing, requesting records, photocopying and mail.

Compiles and reviews documentation for processing of MassHealth applications, ensuring completion of the eligibility process.

Works with external contacts to process information on patient’s accounts and ensures proper coverage for patients.

Works in conjunction with physician offices and billing personnel to ensure proper information exchange.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High School grad or equivalent combination of education and experience; post High School course work in business, accounting or finance preferred; up to three years of relevant working experience in a patient accounts/collection environment with knowledge of third party insurance and regulations, as well as PC experience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to converse in writing and verbally in English in the performance of daily tasks, fluent bilingual language skills are a plus. Must be able to perform accurate data entry. Travel to/from various off site locations as well as throughout the main building.
