Job Description
Responsible for the protection of life and property by performing firefighting, emergency medical aid, hazardous material and fire prevention duties. The position maintains fire equipment, apparatus and facilities. Work is performed under the supervision of the Captain/ Lieutenant. Essential Functions
~ Responds to emergency calls for fire suppression, medical assistance, hazardous materials incidents, specialized rescue, or other emergency situations; may make initial determination of necessary personnel, equipment, and suppression or containment tactics until relieved by superior officer
~ Perform search, rescue, extrication of victims, and forcible entries; assists individuals from burning structures
~ Provide necessary medical care in accordance with established protocols for basic life support; administers emergency medical care requiring use of suction units, immobilization equipment, and oxygen delivery systems; performs physical lifting techniques associated with moving patients between incident site, stretcher or ambulance
~ Drives, maintains, and operates a variety of fire vehicles/apparatus or ambulances; performs driving functions in a safe and efficient manner
~ Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals
~ Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; communicates effectively and coherently over radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications; provides
~ Responds to calls for lost individuals and participates in searches for missing persons
~ Provides crowd and traffic control at emergency scenes; assists with salvage, overhaul, cleanup and evacuation activities as necessary
~ Documents all fire and other emergency incidents and responses
~ Participates in fire prevention and fire safety education activities; conducts tours of the fire station
~ Follow the department chain of command when communicating at different levels
~ Cleans and maintains fire apparatus, equipment, stations and grounds; tests and maintains fire hoses; maintains emergency response equipment in a constant state of readiness
~ Ensure proper supplies are available and ambulance is service ready
~ Attends training, seminars and meetings to remain knowledgeable of modern fire suppression and prevention methods; maintains required certifications
~ Performs general clerical work as required, including but not limited to preparing reports and records, copying and filing documents, entering and retrieving computer data, attending meetings, etc.
~ Performs related tasks as required Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
~ Effective communication, oral and written, with supervisors, peers and public.
~ Understanding and following work rules and suggested operating guidelines.
~ Read, write, add and subtract.
~ Knowledge of national, state and local laws and fire/safety codes.
~ Organize, direct and coordinate written and oral reports.
~ Skilled in report writing, driving, and use of computer, telephone, two-way radio, copy machine, fax machine.
~ Knowledge of fire protection systems, water supply, building construction, direct fire and rescue operations, disaster control and extinguishment of combustible and flammable materials.
~ Skills in firefighting, EMT, fire inspection, fire scene command and public relations
~ Ability to work evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as necessary.
~ Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment. Physical Requirements

This work may require the employee to push, pull, lift, and/or carry in excess of 75 pounds of force; individual is frequently using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, and occasionally requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet while in the office or moderately loud when in the field. There is frequent exposure to physical and emotional stress, fire, adverse weather conditions and hazardous substances with potential for bodily injury or even death. The employee may be required to work in outside weather conditions, in wet and/or humid conditions, or in high, precarious places
