The purpose of the class is to perform mechanical repair work on County-owned diesel powered/ gasoline-powered automobiles, trucks and other light-to-heavy equipment; to ensure that repaired vehicles run properly and safely; to conduct preventive maintenance on such equipment as scheduled; and to perform related work as required. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.

Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Diagnoses and performs mechanical repair work on diesel-powered and gasoline-powered vehicles, trucks and heavy equipment (such as excavators/graders, etc.), including repairing or replacing engines, fuel injection systems, electronic engine controls, electrical systems, brake systems, heating/ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, computer systems, drivetrains, differentials, etc.
  • Repairs emergency services and law enforcement vehicles; installs and maintains specialized equipment on emergency vehicles as necessary.
  • Performs welding and fabrication work as needed.
  • Performs a variety of preventive maintenance duties as scheduled, including changing oil, lubricating, replacing hoses and belts, replacing brakes, checking lights, and tuning engines.
  • Changes and repairs tires on vehicles.
  • Conducts road tests after repair work is completed to ensure that all vehicles are mechanically

safe and functioning properly.

  • Provides emergency field assistance to disabled vehicles.
  • Picks up parts from vendors as necessary.
  • Reviews work orders to ensure repairs are completed correctly and in a timely manner.
  • Maintains records of work completed and parts used.
  • Assists in maintaining a clean and orderly shop.
  • Seeks certifications, attends training, workshops, meetings, etc., as appropriate to maintain or enhance job knowledge and skills as required below.
  • May pick up or repair vehicles or equipment after hours as assigned.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED.
Requires at least two (2) years of vehicle repair and maintenance experience.
Special Qualifications:
Must possess a valid state driver's license.
Must possess Automotive Manufacturer training as required by designation.
This position is not required to pass an ASE Certification exam; but it is preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to co-workers or others.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position; typical work hours and days are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but employees must be available during the “core” work hours of 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. and must work 40 hour each week to maintain full-time status. Employees must be available to work evenings, weekends and holidays during emergencies or as requested. This is a safety sensitive position and employees holding this position have the responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others. This position is subject to random drug testing.
