Gardener is trained to be able to accomplish any of the following tasks as assigned/directed by the Gardens Manager:

Installation (and/or removal) of plants using:

• Proper planting procedures
• Proper removal and disposal procedures

Maintenance of all plant material. This responsibility includes:

• Watering
• Fertilizing
• Dead-heading
• Pruning
• Weeding
• Pest and fungal control

Maintaining the lawns within The Gardens. This includes:

• Seeding (or sodding)
• Mowing
• Watering
• Fertilizing
• Pest and fungal control
• Thatching
• Aerating

Utilizing the irrigation system. This includes:

• Running the irrigation
• Monitoring pumps and water output
• Making improvements
• Maintenance and repairs

Daily cleanup and pre-opening routine of:

• Sweeping or blowing of walkways and terraces
• Raking the grounds as needed
• Removal of debris and/or trash from grounds
• Removal of trash from Gatehouse, Restrooms and Odom Hall
• Removal of recycles from Gatehouse and Odom Hall
• Unlocking and cleaning of public restrooms

Care, maintenance, and proper storage of all equipment, tools and supplies including:

• Vehicles
• Tractors and/or mowers
• Power equipment (such as blowers and chain saws)
• Hand tools such as pruners, shovels, rakes
• Fertilizers, pesticides, cleaning agents, household supplies

Housekeeping of maintenance building including:

• Sweeping, washing or vacuuming floors
• Cleaning bathrooms
• Cleaning breakroom, including all appliances
• Changing of light bulbs, fuses, filters, etc as needed

Safe storage and use of pesticides as required by law. Gardeners are encouraged to earn and maintain a N.C. pesticide applicators license. Pesticides should be inventoried monthly.

Care and cleaning of all fountains, pools and statuary.

Responsible for maintenance of all paths and walkways including:

• Application of straw
• Weeding
• Edging
• Cleaning
• Repairs

Installing plant signage as directed.

Assisting with special events as needed.

Assisting other departments as needed.
