Veterinary Medicine Research and Development (VMRD), the research division of Zoetis, is headquartered in Kalamazoo Michigan. The Animal Research Support (ARS) function within VMRD is searching for a Head of Non-biocontainment Research and Farm Operations. This leadership position will report directly to the ARS Executive Director and will be a member of the Animal Research Support Leadership team.
Position Summary
The Head of Non-Biocontainment Research and Farm Operations position will be based at the Richland Research Farm and is responsible for all aspects of research farm operations and study execution in livestock and equine in support of biologics, pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical veterinary product research. Position responsibilities include but are not limited to:
People leadership – provide guidance, direction and develop the talent reporting through this position. Membership of the Animal Research Support Leadership Team and provide contribution to the execution of the ARS function. Ensures regulatory compliance for animal care and animal study execution in accordance with FDA, USDA APHIS, EPA, and maintain AAALAC accreditation. Operating in inspection ready state at all times. Establishes and maintains key relationships within Zoetis and the external environment. Contributes to the management of VMRD minor capital and operational budgets. Provide oversight of Non-biocontainment Research - Includes maximizing utilization and efficiency of building and vivarium spaces at the Richland site for all livestock species. Provide leadership in overall site strategies including short- and long-term facility changes and site development.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervises feed acquisition and manufacturing activities to ensure the availability of high-quality large animal research diets.
- Manages and oversees strategic operational contracts with external partners and vendors.
- Provides oversight of cropping activities on 1600 acres at the Richland site and procurement of quality feeds and forages for support of research at Richland.
- Directs the feed mill technician staff with acquisition of bulk materials for the manufacturing and packaging of bagged and bulk feeds
- Ensures equipment and procedures are in place for manufacture of research drug-in-diet feeds.
- Supervises farm operations equipment maintenance personnel
- Provide direction and oversight related to maintenance on 100+ farm trucks and rolling stock.
- In support of research activities, coordinate animal handling equipment procurement and alterations as well as animal pen and pasture repairs so that operations maintain appropriate animal welfare standards and study timelines are met
- Serve as ARS resource on the Facility Capital Team, giving input to capital spending at all VMRD US locations. Serve as an SME on facility construction and remodel teams, to ensure appropriate design/build of all VMRD site facilities.
- Provide leadership by serving on the Minor Capital Team, sponsoring Capital Project Appropriations, participating in planning meetings, servicing on contrition project teams and monitoring construction activities.
- Provide oversight of Non-Containment and Biopharma research teams and associated Study Coordinator in the group’s efforts at maximizing utilization and efficiency of building and vivarium spaces at the Richland site for all livestock species.
- Liaise with VMRD Research function line heads to optimize the study coordination model between ARS and partner groups.
- Direction of Managers and Study Coordinator to prioritize workload and resource allocation across work groups.
Requirements and Experience
- A Bachelors degree from an accredited institution in a relevant discipline. Degree in Agribusiness is highly preferred.
- At least 5 years of experience leading people and/or teams. Experience leading people leaders is highly desirable.
Additional experience in any of the following areas is highly preferred:
- Strategic site planning.
- Managing animal facility construction and renovation projects.
- Management of minor capital budgets.
- Livestock and/or equine farm management.
- Management of environmental issues related to farm practices.
- Experience in an animal research setting.
