Histologist Job at Virginia Dept of Health
The Virginia Department of Health, Office of Chief Medical Examiner is actively seeking to recruit a Histologist.
This is a wage (hourly) position and averages 15-29 hours per week, not to exceed 1500 hours in a year, and is not eligible for benefits.
Following direct instruction assists the Assistant Chief Medical Examiner (forensic pathologist) with the completion of examinations by preparing and processing tissue blocks, slides, and frozen sections of organ tissue on all autopsies as well as preparation of special and immunohistochemical stains of tissue slides, body fluids, and trace evidence. Maintains quality control monitoring, secures and prepares supplies for testing, orders supplies, and organizes and maintains archival slide and tissue block files. Performs quality-control tests and maintains the laboratory area and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications
Prior experience or equivalent training in performing preparation of histology slides of postmortem tissues. Ability to conduct histological tests and staining as required, including logs, quality control, testing, and preparing samples for review. Must have experience or equivalent training in histology equipment and instrument maintenance. Must have the ability to work independently and develop new procedures as needed. Experience with MS Office and data entry.
Preferred Qualifications
Prefer histotechnology certification, ASCP, or IMLT (British Equivalent). Preferred qualifications include the following: biological or chemical sciences education/training; hospital, research, or veterinary laboratory experience in histology. Working knowledge of forensic procedures and chain of custody is preferred. Prior experience in a medical examiner’s office setting preferred
Special Requirements
Must be able to work evenings, weekends and some holidays. The selected applicant must possess a valid driver’s license.
Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a state and federal criminal history background check and the Department of Social Service’s Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check, U.S. HHS IG Exclusion List check, employment reference check, and E-Verify. Other financial, credit, driving, or other background checks prior to employment may be required for certain positions. Completion of Statement of Economic Interests will be required upon employment.
