Ardurra is seeking a Junior Structural Engineering Intern (EIT) to join our staff in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Primary Function

Perform detailed structural engineering analysis and design work for projects of varying size, type and complexity. The incumbent must have a working knowledge of conventional design engineering and be capable of planning and conducting tasks requiring code application in the analysis and design of various materials, i.e., steel, concrete, and masonry. Incumbent will apply engineering fundamentals for substantial analysis, design, and modification to meet the requirements of the building code and standards applicable to each project. Development of production drawings and technical specifications for a finished work product that proves the analysis, design, and pertinent project criteria are adequate to protect the health, safety and welfare of the public. All work will be conducted under the direct supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer.

Primary Duties

• Assist senior staff in conducting preliminary studies, performing preliminary analysis and design and preparation of sketches for preliminary engineering reports for structural projects, including but not limited to commercial structures, industrial / plant facilities, marine structures, water and wastewater plants, and/or educational facilities as assigned by the Engineer of Record.
• Preparation and processing of structural documents/studies for review by senior engineer to meet QA/QC guidelines
• Assist during analysis to determine code-based load and load combinations applicable to the project to be used during detailed design for a variety of low to mid-rise structures for various industries and clientele.
• Structural design experience should include steel, concrete, and masonry materials for low to mid-rise structures and/or other specialty structures
• Prepare engineering calculation packages and engineering sketches; reviewing criteria and drawings; generating project specifications and technical reports; assisting the team in the preparation of design documents; and coordinating design with drafting team and various design disciplines
• Candidate should have a working knowledge of Geotechnical Engineering reports and be able to follow their recommendations in the design of shallow and deep foundation systems
• Develop drawings and technical specification packages that adequately depict the work to be constructed for projects to comply with applicable codes and standards
• Perform onsite observations during the course of construction to verify that foundations and structures are being constructed in accordance with applicable codes and standards and as depicted on the structural drawings.
• Review vendor submittal drawings, steel fabrication drawings, concrete mix designs and other submittals related to the project, during the construction process

• Evaluate Requests for Information (RFI’s) from the general contractor to determine the need for design changes and makes appropriate recommendations to the Engineer of Record for verification and approval for response to the RFI.

Education and Experience Requirements

• Master’s degree in structural engineering from an ABET accredited program with the following course work preferred:
• Finite Element Analysis
• Design of Steel Structures
• Foundation Design, shallow and deep systems
• Reinforced Concrete Structure Design
• Pre-stressed Concrete Design
• Masonry Design
• Familiar with Geotechnical Engineering
• 1 to 3 years of structural engineering experience with Engineering-in-Training certificate registered with Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors
• Experience with Water/Wastewater, Public Works, and Commercial projects is required.
• Industrial/Plant, Marine, and Higher Education facility design is preferred
• Building design experience is required
• Experience with designing anchor bolts, base plate, bolted and welded connections
• Working knowledge of Prestressed Concrete standards is required
• Experienced in STAAD.Pro or RISA3D is required
• Efficient in MS Excel skills is required
• AutoCAD experience preferred
• Strong written and verbal communication skills are required
