Laboratory Technician Job at Johns Hopkins University
We are seeking a Laboratory Technician who will work for the Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health (Center) as part of its infectious disease prevention team. This is a full-time position. This position works together with the Center's field and Baltimore-based research team to assist in the development, coordination and delivery of field-based public health services.
The goals of the infectious disease prevention projects are to evaluate the impact and efficacy of research projects aimed at improving health outcomes for Native American families and communities. Study data results will focus on public health outcomes specific to the approved protocols at the worksite.
The Center for American Indian Health (CAIH) is located administratively within International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The core activities housed at CAIH include research studies of infectious diseases and behavioral health, and a training program.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of site, field and Baltimore-based supervisory staff members this individual will serve as a Laboratory Technician for the Center's field-based infectious disease prevention projects. Specific responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
Lab Specimens
Follow established procedures or protocols and utilize aseptic technique to perform laboratory tasks and/or experiments which may include bacterial subculture, confirmation of bacterial identification, specimen receiving and shipping, aliquotting of specimens, monitoring specimen inventory, and sample processing and storage
Operate basic laboratory equipment such as a vortex, centrifuge, incubator, and additional equipment as appropriate
Prepare bacterial subcultures of Category A Infectious Substances.
Conduct and document tests to confirm identification of bacterial agents of (e.g.) pneumonia and meningitis, using algorithms and laboratory media appropriate for suspected etiologic agents
General Lab Maintenance
Contribute to the general maintenance of the laborary, equipment and supplies
Know where to locate and how to use the Material Safety Data Sheet binder and provide updates to the Indian Health Service (IHS supervisor as needed on reagents used in the Center's Whiteriver lab)
Monitor freezer and refrigerator temperatures, documenting and responding to temperature excursions
Maintain specimen inventory and organization according to procedures
Respond to freezer alarms and related specimen integrity issues, identify, document, and communicate issues as needed
Prepare solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures, as appropriate
Prepare materials for microbiological testing of bacterial cultures
Monitor supply inventory levels, and maintain organization of supplies
Order materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, count orders upon receipt
Lab Safety
Comply with use of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, lab coat and protective eyeware as required
Comply with biohazard/radiation and general laboratory safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the workplace
Handle dry ice and liquid nitrogen in accordance with safety guidelines
Assist with the training of field staff in appropriate shipping protocols and designations as responsible party on federally and internationally regulated "Shippers Declaration for Dangerous Goods" for Category B Infectious Substances
Collect, organize, and maintain records of attendance at training sessions and provide this documentation to Baltimore for maintenance of training records
Data
Operate the lab computer for timely data entry
Maintain health records in accordance with regulating agency guidelines
Complete and maintain chart reviews and provide timely reports related to lab data
Maintain contact with field sites regarding the collection, storage and shipping of specimens and isolates
Collect data and review for accuracy; process as needed
Study Activities
Screen eligible participants for participation in research and service projects
Administer informed consent
Handle study specimen samples appropriately (i.e. specimen collection, processing and storing)
Transport and deliver services to enrolled study participants as directed by field-based Investigators, Supervisors and Coordinators
Provide follow-up services to individuals as outlined in the study protocol
Coordinate study documentation (printing/ filing/copying/scanning for transmission to appropriate field sites and the Baltimore-based research office)
Work with the rest of the study team on duties related to the general conduct of the study and participate in staff meetings to review project goals and protocols
Attend and participate in community-based meetings and events including the presentation of study approval requests, project progress and goals achieved
Travel to other field sites to assist with site duties as needed
Travel to field-based training meetings on a regular basis with overnight travel as needed
Assist with the other Center-wide programmatic duties as needed
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
High School Diploma or equivalent
Minimum of six (6) months of experience in a health care, educational or related setting
Working knowledge of standard laboratory procedures, aseptic technique, and/or microbiology achieved through work or education
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Must be comfortable completing invasive procedures including specimen collection (nasal, saliva, urine, blood) and other samples from participants
Proficiency in the use of computers, including software applications, databases, spreadsheets, and word processing
Excellent organizational and time management skills; independent and self-motivated
Highly organized and detail oriented
Ability to manage multiple and competing priorities
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Demonstrated strong, positive interpersonal skills
Ability to communicate effectively across disciplines and within a variety of cultures
Physical Requirements:
Possible exposure to communicable diseases
Work requires standing and or walking for extended periods of time
Work requires manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to perform research study procedures
Other:
Current driver's license issued by the state of residence and good driving record required
Ability to travel with overnight stays required as needed
Some evening, weekend and holiday work may be required
May be required to work at other sites
Guidelines regarding travel time and project vehicle use will be clarified based on specific site needs
This position will maintain background clearance as required by the employer and any collaborating agencies
