As an Auditor 5 in Region 3, you will directly support the mission of the Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) in regards to safeguarding the safety and health of the workforce by ensuring that employers carry industrial insurance and pay the correct amount of premiums per the assigned risk classification of their business.

In this supervisory role, you will supervise auditors who conduct audits of business’ financial records to determine premium liability for industrial insurance, and exercise independent judgement in determining the course and outcome of audits.

You will provide instructions, guidance, training, technical assistance, coaching and mentoring for auditors who in turn educate employers during on-site visits about prime contractor liability, independent contractors, record keeping and reporting requirements.

As an Auditor 5, you will prepare extensive reports on audits conducted and audit findings.
You will maintain and adhere to LEAN principles to ensure standard work is followed by auditors, and work with staff to ensure process improvement efforts continue.

This position works directly with customers in the field. Due to the nature of this position’s work, the incumbent of this position will be expected at times to work in an L&I office environment and/or in a location out in the field.

Duties

Some of what you’ll do:


  • Supervise, direct and coordinate activities of field auditors engaged in audit.
  • Receive, review and make audit assignments to field auditors.
  • Review completed audits to determine if the employer is in compliance with industrial insurance laws and that the audit findings are consistent with accepted accounting principles and auditing theory.
  • Ensure field auditors are advising and educating employers about prime contractor liability, recordkeeping and reporting requirements.
  • Ensure subpoenas and other legal documents are prepared as needed and field auditors are prepared to testify before the Board of Industrial Insurance Appeals and/or other courts on their audit findings; work with AAG and Litigation Specialist to discuss appeals by employers and resolve audit findings before cases go into the formal hearing process.
  • Prepare and maintain production statistics and scorecard reports on field audit staff.
  • Responsible for hiring, staff development and adherence to rules and procedures and ensure work product meets professional standards.
  • Identify audit process issues and problems while involving staff in problem solving process.
  • Evaluate budget and time requirements.

Qualifications


Required:

A Bachelor’s degree which includes 20 semester or 30 quarter hours in accounting AND four (4) years of professional accounting or auditing experience.

Additional professional level accounting or auditing experience will substitute; year for year, for the education except for the 20 semester or 30 quarter hours in accounting (may include credits from one (1) Finance class OR one (1) Business Law class).

Demonstration of position specific skills and abilities

Desired:

A Master’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Economics or closely allied field, or certification as a Public Accountant, Fraud Examiner, Internal Auditor, Information System Auditor, Management Accountant or equivalent certification will substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.

Strong knowledge of RCW Title 51, WAC 296-17, and WAC 296-17A
