ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES may include but are not limited to the following. Other job-related duties may be assigned

A. ASSIST STUDENTS by

· Under the direction and supervision of the teacher, providing instructional support in variety of subject areas, reinforcing teacher instruction regarding assignments and activities

· Under the direction and supervision of the teacher, providing self help assistance where necessary,

· Providing a safe learning environment for the assigned student(s)

· Demonstrating instructional lessons using a sign system understood by the student when appropriate

· Facilitating communication between assigned student(s) and other class members and/or other persons

B. ASSIST STAFF AND OTHER SCHOOL PERSONNEL by

· Implementing IEP goals regarding sign language and instructional support

· Serving as liaison between special education and regular education teachers

· Facilitating communication between assigned students, special and regular education teachers and other school personnel.

C. MAINTAIN A COOPERATIVE AND PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH STAFF AND SUPERVISORS by

§ Establishing and maintaining effective and cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work

§ Communicating effectively with those contacted in the course of work

D. MAINTAIN A HIGH LEVEL OF ETHICAL BEHAVIOR AND CONFIDENTIALITY OF

ANY INFORMATION REGARDING STUDENTS, PERSONNEL AND ALL JOB- RELATED MATTERS

§ Complies with Sign Language Interpreter Code of Ethics

E. TEAM RESPONSIBILITIES

§ Works independently with infrequent supervisory instruction

§ At the request and under the guidance of the supervisor, may be responsible for supervision of children

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Licensure and Certification

§ High School Diploma or G.E.D. supplemented with any combination of training and experience likely to provide the desired knowledge and abilities.

Experience

§ Experience working with special needs students who are deaf or hard of hearing preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

§ Knowledge of core sign language or signed systems skills with knowledge of ASL and Signed English systems and finger spelling

§ Knowledge of language development and learning differences in children who are deaf or hard of hearing

§ Basic understanding of the implications of hearing loss

§ Basic computer skills

§ Basic skills using communication devices

§ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and staff

§ Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing

§ Ability to manage stressful situations

§ Ability to manage time and responsibilities with minimal supervision

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job include sitting, standing or kneeling, and extensive use of the hands for communication systems and business related equipment. Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far visual acuity, and depth perception and providing oral information are important aspects of this job. Persons performing services in this position classification will exert 50 to 75 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, or otherwise move objects.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job may include a large and small group classroom setting. Employee may be required to sign under various environmental conditions including but not limited to outdoor arenas, field trips or other non-building venues.

MENTAL/MOTOR DEMANDS: The employee works with frequent supervisory instruction.

Potential hand fatigue may be experienced.
