Library Aide - PT Job at Franklin County, VA
The County of Franklin seeks a part-time Library Aide for the Franklin County Public Library System. Duties include performing routine clerical work in primarily the Rocky Mount location; assisting the public in the use of library facilities; maintaining circulation & other appropriate records. This part-time position will “normally” be scheduled as follows: Monday 9-5; Tuesday and Thursday 11-7 and Saturday 8:45 – 1:00 PM for a total of 26.25 hours. This position is primarily for the Main Library in Rocky Mount but will also be expected to fill in at the Westlake location as required. This position has part time vacation, sick and holiday benefits.
Combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, clerical and/or library exp pref. Hourly rate of $12.44. General Definition
Performs routine clerical work in the public library. Maintains and updates customer library cards and access. Responsible for proper documentation of library materials borrowed, returned and archived. Provides excellent customer service to all library patrons, ensures library materials/books are shelved correctly and maintains professional appearance of library materials. Assists with special projects as assigned.
Organizational Relationship
Work is performed under regular supervision under the Director of Libraries or designee.
Typical Tasks
- Charges and discharges books;
- Assists in controlling status of books in circulation, checks on overdue books, sends notifications to delinquents, maintains files and records as required; assists the public in the use of library facilities, locates books, magazines and other materials requested, provides general library information, including answering reference questions both in-house and on the telephone; assists patrons with computer needs;
- Examines shelves, replaces incorrectly shelved books;
- Prepares patron registration cards;
- Follows Library SOP’s and policies;
- Collects fines;
- Maintains circulation and other appropriate records;
- Assists with special projects;
- Maintains professional working relationship with all staff,
- Performs other duties as may be assigned.
Essential Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
Some knowledge of the procedures, practices and equipment of a public library; some knowledge of business English, spelling and arithmetic; ability to learn standard library tasks readily and to adhere to prescribed routines; ability to perform routine clerical and record-keeping tasks; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library patrons and employees; ability to learn computer and other technologically advanced skills; ability to utilize office software and email; general interest in books and authors.
Training, Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, and some experience in general clerical or library work.

Physical Demands
Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time; reach, kneel, bend & lift up to 30 pounds.
Work Environment
Work is performed in a library/office environment.
