Media and Communications Coordinator II Job at City of Virginia Beach
Job Duties:
The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center is seeking a proactive public relations professional to serve as the primary point of contact with the media, to develop and execute internal and external communication messages and strategies, and to assist with social media strategy and implementation.
Responsibilities
- Own, manage and execute all Public Relations activities, including developing the Virginia Aquarium release/pitch calendar, proactive pitches, news releases, partner quotes, metrics, and other external-facing statements
- Work with internal stakeholders to identify and build unique stories based on VAQ goals and initiatives
- Manage media monitoring and analysis, including the creation of reports related to monthly media coverage.
- Draft and edit communication materials including press releases, media pitches, editorial pieces, media statements, topline messages, press kits, speeches/presentations, and other communication materials for various targeted audiences.
- Collaborate with marketing team and Virginia Aquarium leadership on story development, advocacy strategies and issues management, as needed.
- Coordinate all media interviews (virtual and on-site), determine talking points, and prepare interview subjects. Serve as spokesperson as appropriate.
- Accommodate media requests for specific content, photography, videography, logos, etc.
- Host on-site photo and video shoots in accordance with the City’s Special Events Office policies and procedures.
- Supervise Digital Marketing Manager and assist with social media content strategy and implementation.
- Facilitate reputation management, drafting responses to guest reviews and feedback received through the Virginia Aquarium’s social and digital channels
- Provide crisis communication support as needed to the City Manager's office during emergencies. May work in the Emergency Operations Center - Joint Information Center as needed.

Minimum Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications: Requires any combination of education (above high school level) and/or experience equivalent to six (6) years in fields such as public relations, communications, marketing, or journalism utilizing the required knowledge, skills and abilities. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City’s operational status.

Preferences:
Experience leading and developing PR outreach and campaign strategies.
Three (3) or more years direct Public Relations/media relations experience.
Two (2) or more years experience supervising full time staff
Experience monitoring and reporting media coverage.
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Business, Marketing and Public Relations
Experience working within the aquarium, zoo, tourism, or attraction industries.
