Performs selected MA and administrative duties and assists providers as part of the clinical care team.
Duties typically includes taking vital signs, recording patient complaints and histories, drawing blood, providing patient education, and assisting providers with procedures. This position requires compliance with CommuniHealth Services’ (CHS) written standards, including the Compliance Plan and policies and procedures (including the Code of Conduct).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Functions within the scope of their approved competency skills checklist.

2. Improves access to care by offering same day appointments and after-hours care and advice.

3. Conducts pre-visit planning by reviewing and updating patient charts prior to appointment with recent test results and referral correspondence. Identifies needed services per practice protocol.

4. Confers with provider regarding any incomplete and/or unreconciled ordered patient tests/consults or other incomplete orders and making determination of scheduling of patient for completion.

5. Participates in Quality Improvement initiatives by reviewing EMR to assess when patients are due for testing, screenings, or preventative exams, by scheduling ticklers for appointments.

6. Prepares patients for examination and treatment.

7. Prepares, cleans, and maintains exam and treatment rooms.

8. Gives injections and draws blood; completes point of care testing and screenings, assists with EKGs, OB/GYN exams and office procedures as needed; provides other patient care services as directed by providers.

9. Maintains sample medication logs, administers in-house medication upon provider order and responds to medication requests per practice protocol.

10. Prepares and maintains clinical supplies and equipment.

11. Receives and responds to patient in-person and telephone communications within approved policies and procedures.

12. Coordinates care with disease management or case management programs as needed.

13. Documents, maintains, copies and scans pertinent information into the patient electronic medical record.

14. Provides patient counseling/teaching.

15. Monitors immunizations status of patients using the Louisiana Immunization Network System (LINKS) and administer needed immunizations per provider’s order. Correctly adds the immunizations given into LINKS.

16. Discards all medical waste in accordance with clinic waste disposal policy and guidelines established by OSHA and EPA.

17. Cleans and runs quality control on equipment as detailed in the clinic policy.

18. Treats staff, providers, visitors and patients with dignity and respect.

19. Attends and participates in continuing educational programs and state and federal initiatives designed to maintain competency regarding changes in professional guidelines and standards.

20. Completes required CHS training per policy, maintains compliance with and knowledge of all CHS departmental, facility specific and system-wide policy and procedure, attends mandatory departmental meetings and/or training and follows CHS Mission, Vision and Values in delivery of all services.

21.Maintains strictest confidentiality and adheres to all HIPAA guidelines/regulations as well as compliance with HRSA regulations.

22. In addition to the outlined duties above, as a patient-centered medical home, the incumbent fulfills the principles and theories outlined in organizational policies including assisting navigating patients as needed through the health system, making appropriate referrals to case/care management, communicating with the healthcare team to address patient/family/caregiver specific needs, etc.

23. This position may require work beyond normal working hours.

24. Performs other related work as required.

Education/Licensure:

1. High school graduate or GED

2. Medical Assistant Training, preferred but not required

3. Life Support Training

Skills/Experience:

1. Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language in an understandable manner.

2. Preferred one (1) year experience of medical clinic experience.

3. Knowledge of medical business office procedures.

4. Ability to establish rapport and maintain effective working relationship with patients, employees, and the public.

5. Ability to perform well- organized and detail-oriented work while maintaining privacy in all aspects of the job.

6. Competence to gather information such as vital signs, weight, changes in medical history including medications, and utilize screenings and interpret results of those screenings during each telehealth appointment.

7. Ability to facilitate a connection with telehealth prescriber via teleconferencing and support communication of needed information to and from the prescriber for the patients.

Environmental/Working Conditions:

1. Works in a well-lighted/ventilated office area of the facility.

2. Is subject to frequent interruptions.

3. Is involved with personnel, patients, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc., under all conditions/circumstances.

4. Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset personnel, patients, visitors, etc.

5. Is willing to work beyond normal working hours: weekends, holidays, and other shifts/positions as necessary.

6. Attends and participates in continuing educational programs designed to keep you abreast of changes in your profession.

7. Is subject to cuts, bruises, falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc., throughout the workday.

8. May be exposed to blood borne pathogens, infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including the potential exposure to the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses.

9. Occasional overtime may be required and/or hours may be shortened as business needs dictate.

Physical Demands:

1. Must be able to handle occasional lifting and pulling.

2. Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday to other sites, if needed.

3. Must be able to function independently, have personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with patients, personnel, and support agencies.

4. Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile people within the facility.
