Nanofabrication Processing Engineer Job at MIT

MIT Cambridge, MA 02139

Information on MIT’s COVID-19 vaccination requirement can be found at the bottom of this posting.

NANOFABRICATION PROCESSING ENGINEER, Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE)-Quantum Photonics Group, to join a group creating the materials and devices underpinning next-generation quantum technologies such as spin-photon gates. A leading quantum information processing platform consists of diamond color centers which have enabled demonstrations of deterministic remote entanglement and large-scale hybrid integration into photonic integrated circuits. The MIT Quantum Photonics group has pioneered diamond nanofabrication and on-chip heterogeneous integration, working across the full-stack of diamond technology to enable modular solid-state spin qubits for scalable quantum network nodes and computing. The group now leverages more than a decade of process optimization, employing automated materials and device characterization in a data-driven feedback loop. Devices can be deployed across a variety of interdisciplinary applications represented by the diverse research directions pursued at MIT and with our external collaborators. Partners include MITRE Corporation, Sandia National Laboratory, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, and startup companies. The diamond process engineer will streamline and systematically improve nanofabrication of diamond quantum devices (building on recently developed processes). Responsibilities include conducting creation of defect centers in diamond, including polishing via chemical etching, coordinating with external vendors for ion implantations, tri-acid cleaning, high-temperature annealing; conducting the full diamond fabrication process to realize diamond devices in MIT.nano, including includes lithography, thin-film technology, and dry and wet etching; conducting hybrid integration of fabricated diamond devices into PICs or CMOS chips.

Job Requirements
REQUIRED: B.S. in electrical engineering, physics, material science, or related discipline; experience in clean room fabrication on lithography, thin-film technology, and etching process; and experience in R&D and performing hands-on work; and an interest in tinkering, hacking, innovation, and changing the world for the better.
