Position Title:
Police Intelligence Specialist
Job Description:
This classification is reserved for incumbents whose position is covered by the contract of a recognized collective bargaining unit.

This specialist position incorporates complex research methodologies, statistical analyses, intelligence analyses, quantitative analyses, and GIS mapping strategies to perform data reviews and analysis of crime reports. Interprets crime patterns and trends. Disseminates information and makes recommendations related to possible suspects, potential crimes, locations of future crimes, and forecasting of future criminal events. Establishes methods for other employees to obtain relevant crime information, reports and maps. Develops and maintains partnerships with governmental agencies, individual citizens, and community groups to facilitate problem solving efforts and enhance citizen involvement in their communities.

TYPICAL DUTIES:
  • Develops, prepares, and compiles material of current crime trends and patterns for officials including general statistical reports and detailed intelligence reports.
  • Uses various data and statistics to prepare a variety of detailed factual, analytical, forecasting statistical, and narrative reports. This may include dates, times, locations and other detailed information related to criminal activities and problem locations.
  • Analyzes, monitors, and identifies local, state, and national intelligence information to assess developments, trends, and threat implications within a geographical area.
  • Assists in preparing and conducting briefings and presentations on case investigations as well as assists local police detectives and officers in mapping, charting, and analysis of crime data.
  • Takes an active problem-solving role in the Intelligence led policing model and Department’s Fusion Team concept. This includes working with representatives from federal, state and local law enforcement agencies as well as other government entities and private sector businesses to reach out of the box solutions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • In depth, demonstrated experience and skill performing statistical, intelligence, and/or crime analysis to include reviewing and summarizing data and report findings, and writing and drafting analytical reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to use analytical and problem-solving skills in working with department management, supervisors, professional peers, other employees, and the general public.
  • Must successfully pass all examinations as required by the Salt Lake City Civil Service
  • Commission Rules and Regulations.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement practices, criminal law, and federal requirements with reference to crime analysis, statistics, intelligence analysis, record keeping, and dissemination of restricted information.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background check and drug screen.
  • Working level skills in spreadsheets, statistics, report writing, and presentations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Current knowledge and/or experience in a legal or law enforcement environment involving compiling, analyzing, and interpreting data.
  • Working knowledge of computer programs, databases, and systems used to gather analytics and intelligence applicable to law enforcement.
  • In depth knowledge of statistics and quantitative analysis.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Statistics, Criminology, Criminal Justice or a closely related field.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Generally comfortable physical working conditions requiring light physical effort. Intermittent sitting, standing and walking, and frequent use of a computer, telephone, and other standard office equipment.
  • May require shift work, including holidays and weekends.
  • May be subject to callouts to meet the needs of the Salt Lake City Police Department.
