University System of New Hampshire Durham, NH

Summary

Operating Title
Postdoctoral Researcher

Long Classification Title
POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH/TEACHING

Campus Location
Durham

Department
UNH CEPS Chemical Engineering

Summary of Position
The newly formed Bio-Inspired On-demand Strategies for Engineering Nanostructured Sensors (BIO-SENS) team, a National Science Foundation (NSF) EPSCoR funded team led by the University of New Hampshire (UNH), is looking for a new member of our leadership team. The team has active members at Auburn University, University of New England, University of Wyoming, and University of Maine.
The focus of the team is on developing engineering principles to guide on-demand biosensor design towards Industry 4.0 applications. BIO-SENS is comprised of four distinct projects:
Project 1 (Prof. Pantazes, Auburn University): The design, development, and validation of protein recognition elements (REs) with targeted hotspot interactions.
Project 2 (Prof. Balog, University of New England): The creation of genetically engineered analyte-responsive polymers, that amplify the signal of analyte binding to REs at process conditions.
Project 3 (Prof. Hill, University of Wyoming): The development of innovative Scanning ElectroChemical Cell Microscopy techniques to reproducibly nanopattern soft matter surfaces for array construction.
Project 4 (Prof. Halpern, University of New Hampshire): The measurement of electrochemical transduction of surface events of analyte-responsive polymers using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy specifically to continuously measure IL-6 and insulin.

The specific postdoctoral researcher will be hosted by the Surface Enhanced Electrochemical Diagnostic Sensors (SEEDS Lab) and mentored by Prof. Jeffrey M Halpern at the University of New Hampshire. The postdoctoral research is expected to bridge Project 4 with at least one of the other projects. The candidate’s suggestion on which project(s) to intersect should be based on the candidate’s background and interest, and the candidate’s ideas should be covered in their research statement (1 page max). The selected postdoctoral researcher will become part of the BIO-SENS leadership team, engage with industrial partners, and get experience managing a research budget.
In addition, this research will be coupled with a multi-tiered workforce development plan integrated throughout the project that includes training for a new biotechnology workforce in AL, ME, NH, and WY. We expect the postdoctoral scholar to be a partner in some of these activities, especially in the diversity, equity, and inclusion work centered around training the new biotechnology industry workforce.

For full consideration, please include:
  • Resume/curriculum vitae
  • 1-page research statement
  • 1-page DEI/Workforce Development Statement
  • Three references that can speak to these documents
