Primary Purpose of this Position:
Coordinate and direct the work of an assigned group of shop employees to meet production schedules and goals.
Essential Job Functions:
- Advise Production Supervisor on manpower, material, equipment and other resources necessary to meet production schedules and requirements.
- Plan and coordinate the work of assigned shop personnel.
- Train and assist personnel in the shop with shop operations and loading of material.
- Carry out the job functions required of the roles in their department, not limited to the functions listed on this job description.

- Receive, unload, and/or locate materials in inventory, shops, or staging areas
- Advise appropriate personnel of customer order problems, inventory stock outs, supplier discrepancies, shortages, damaged materials, and/or other problems.

- Carry out the job functions of the Production Supervisor when the Production Supervisor is absent or unavailable.
- Identify shop drawing/load list/inventory errors and discrepancies before or during early stages of production.
- Verbally enforce work and safety rules; report violations to the Supervisor/Manager immediately.
- Provide verbal feedback to Supervisor/Manager regarding job performance of assigned personnel.
- Make recommendations for improvements in methods or equipment.
- Other duties as directed by the Supervisor/Manager.
Knowledge, Skill and Abilities Required:
- Ability to understand and carry out complicated verbal and written instructions
- Ability to maximize cooperation and teamwork among assigned employees and with other departments.
- Ability to plan and coordinate the work of a group of assigned employees in order to maximize efficiency and meet appropriate goals and deadlines.
- Ability to perform extensive decision making and independent judgment regarding the sequence of operations and actions to be taken within the guidelines of a particular job or alternative methods to be used to complete a job.
- Ability to work under limited supervision that focuses only on clarification or interpretation of procedures or job schedules.
- Possess thorough understanding of all shop processes within a given shop or area.
- As a Fabrication Lead possess thorough understanding of the fabrication requirements shown on shop drawings including complex fabricated assemblies.
- As a Processing Lead possess thorough understanding of the processing requirements shown on shop drawings.
- As a Paint/Loading Lead possess thorough understanding of blast/paint requirements on a given job along with the ability to work closely with the Shipping department to properly load for shipment to the customer.
- Demonstrate good leadership, communication and training skills required to effectively manage a group of shop employees.
Physical Demands:
- Stand FREQUENTLY over the course of the 8 to 12 hour work shift.
- Walk OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY over the course of the 8 to 12 hour work shift. The distances walked will range from a distance of a few feet to 60 feet.
- Sit only during the break and lunch periods. Rarely one will be able to sit while running machine.
- Lift weights up to 20 pounds from floor to chest CONTINUOUSLY, which includes the various tools utilized in the process of performing the usual work duties.
- Lift weights up to 35 pounds FREQUENTLY from floor to head level during the 8 to 12 hour work shift.
- Lift weights up to 50 pounds OCCASIONALLY from floor to head level during the 8 to 12 hour work shift. Jib cranes and overhead cranes are available for the employee’s assistance with lifting.
- Lift weights up to 70 pounds OCCASIONALLY from knee to waist level during the 8 to 12 hour work shift. Jib cranes and overhead cranes are available for the employee’s assistance with lifting.
- Lift weights up to 85 pounds OCCASIONALLY from floor to waist level during the 8 to 12 hour work shift. Jib cranes and overhead cranes are available for the employee’s assistance with lifting.
- Carry weights noted above distances ranging from a few feet to 60 feet.
- Climb OCCASIONALLY onto or over the conveyors, into the scrap pit, onto trailers, and on stacks of beams ranging up to 10 feet while performing job duties.
- Stoop or crouch OCCASIONALLY while performing the regular job duties. The position will be held continuously for a few seconds to 15 minutes, depending upon the job.
- Kneel in the commission of job duties on an OCCASIONALLY, depending upon the job.
- Crawl OCCASIONALLY up to 10 feet to access tools, materials, etc.
- Reach forward OCCASIONALLY to CONTINUOUSLY, depending on job, to perform job duties or to retrieve tools. The employee will OCCASIONALLY be required to reach to full forward extension.
- Reach overhead OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY, depending on job, to guide material attached to the cranes and to attach the chains from the crane to the material.
- Push and pull drawers open OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY to retrieve tools. Employee will OCCASIONALLY push material attached to a jib crane or overhead crane to properly guide into place. Force varies up to 35 pounds.
- Pull material OCCASIONALLY at waist height.
- Pull hand over hand OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY to pull chain through material. Force varies up to 70 pounds- Warehouse-Loader position only.
- Gross finger dexterity skills required to operate the various tools and equipment utilized in the course of standard job duties. Fine finger dexterity is not required.
Non-Material Handling Demands
- Employee is expected to work 40 hours a week. However, hours including overtime and weekends may be required based on Drake-Williams Steel’s needs.
- Hear sufficiently to be aware of safety issues.
- Visual ability to read and interpret cut lists and shop drawings. Safety glasses are required in the shop area.
- Exposure to heat, cold, wet and humid conditions in the shop area OCCASIONALLY.
- Exposure to fumes, odors and dusts in the shop area OCCASIONALLY.
- Exposure to solvents, greases, oils, and coolants OCCASIONALLY.
- Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment. PPE includes steel-toe safety shoes, hearing protection, safety glasses, gloves, and hard hats.
Tools Required:
Pencil, Square, Tape Measure, Markers, Wire Brushes, Grinders, Hammers, Grab Hooks, Vise Grips, Allen Wrenches, Pry-Bar, C-Clamps, Slings and Chains and other task specific tools needed to complete tasks.
Machines Utilized:
Computer, Cranes, Forklifts and all pertinent equipment in your assigned area.
Experience and Education Required:
- High School degree or equivalent.
