Professional Assistant–Network Services Assistant–Infrastructure Services Job at Suffolk County Community College
Announcement is hereby made for a 12-month, full-time, Professional Assistant–Network Services Assistant position in the Office of Infrastructure Services (Central) located on the Ammerman Campus in Selden. Suffolk County Community College is an open admissions institution committed to serving a diverse student population in a variety of degree and career programs.
This is a Unit III position covered under the Faculty Association of Suffolk County Community College collective bargaining agreement with the College.
Job Description
The Network Services Assistant (PA) reports to the College’s Administrative Director for Infrastructure Services. The PA performs the day-to-day functions of the College’s wireless network, maintains security scans on the overall network, and assists with the configuration and maintenance of the college’s core network admission control systems. Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Maintain wireless network components to include switches, access points and any support systems for both administrative and educational wireless networks.
- Troubleshoot wireless connectivity issues from end point through system connectivity.
- Assist with the installation and operation of equipment supporting the network, including switches, routers, servers, and temporary installations or rerouting to support special programs. Individual must maintain knowledge of all types of networking and should maintain proficiency with college networking products.
- Assist the College Administrative Director for Infrastructure Services on the configuration and maintenance of college-wide network admission control systems. Maintain and identify devices and users on networks, configure policies for access within systems and identify anomalies with access control.
- Assist the College Administrative Director for Infrastructure Services by providing reports and log information on the wireless networking systems, logging of network users and correlation of log reports to identify and match incidents to users.
- Conduct security risk assessments and consult with the supervisor and other departments regarding security on existing and new implementations.
- Maintain vulnerability scanning systems and report on potential network vulnerabilities that could lead to exploits. Must be able to discern between those of a critical nature and recommend fixes so that other ITS teams have what is needed to correct the issues on their controlled systems.
- Report on day-to-day operations of the campus subnets including the review of utilization, documentation of network performance, and identification and analysis of traffic problems.
- Participate in the development, implementation and maintenance of disaster recovery processes and techniques to assure continuity of business and security controls in the event of system unavailability.
- All other duties assigned by the College Administrative Director for Infrastructure Services that relate to the needs of the department and/or the needs of the college.
- Associates Degree in Computer Science/Network Administration or related field.
Minimum Qualifications
- A minimum of three (3) years of experience as a network professional in connectivity services/configuration of network devices and in security-based systems used for scanning and auditing.
- Knowledge and skills in the use of electronic test equipment, hand tools, network/IP equipment and low voltage power.
- Knowledge and skills to maintain network equipment along with server operating systems and applications related to security.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds; carry ladders; and to work on high elevations.
- Ability to pull cables and prepare network drops.
- Valid driver’s license; may be required to drive to other campuses to service equipment and software.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a higher education environment
- ITIL Foundations certification
- PMP certification
- Information security certification
The exact salary will be determined by prior teaching experience and placement on the salary scale negotiated by the Faculty Association of Suffolk County Community College.
