JOB SUMMARY:

This role has direct accountability for driving underwriting policy and performance, underwriting quality, appetite guidance and overall underwriting excellence. The Program Underwriter works in partnership with the CUO to ensure that results are achieved consistent with the objectives outlined in the operating plans and line of business strategies.

Further it will maintain strong cross-functional partnership with many key areas including P&L owners, Claims, Actuarial, and Finance.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Overall underwriting responsibility for maintaining and ensuring the quality and integrity of underwriting decisions for a portfolio of target market Programs.
  • Establishes underwriting guidelines and policies and oversees the referral process of MGA/PA's.
  • Assists the CUO in the management of CAT Exposures and Reinsurance Programs for both Property and Casualty lines of business
  • Assists the CUO and senior leadership team in the due diligence process for all assigned new programs.
  • Assists the CUO in the establishment of relevant program specific KPI's and lead the monthly underwriting reviews with all assigned Program clients.
  • Leads the process of development and communication of underwriting guidelines and policies with client Programs.
  • The position leads the process to implement and monitor underwriting policy, develop and communicate new practices and processes, and solicit feedback from other relevant departments.
  • Published underwriting content (Program specific underwriting guidelines, manuals, bulletins, articles, etc.) is developed, reviewed and shared with Program clients.
  • Communicate Underwriting Guidance: From a broad view of the market, assist the CUO oversee the establishment and/or modification of underwriting policy, guidelines, and appetite.
  • Operate as subject matter expert providing direction to the segments/lines of business as well as insight and thought leadership to assigned Programs.
  • Bring deep understanding of program business by line of business and be able to translate that understanding to a clearly articulated strategy for internal teams and external audiences.
  • Participate in the implementation of new products and product changes, including establishing underwriting documentation and assuring the products are concurrent with reinsurance authority
  • Analyze the financial performance of the assigned Program. Identify trends in performance and develop an action plan to bring the performance in line with expectations.
  • Work with the management team to establish and maintain new business and renewal rate manuals and underwriting guidelines.
  • Perform client underwriting audits and provide reports to management at regularly scheduled intervals.
  • Engage with actuaries, internal staff, and reinsurers to monitor and manage product performance
  • Work with internal staff to ensure rates and product are appropriately communicated and executed accurately and on a timely basis.
  • Interact with the compliance department to ensure all products remain in full compliance.
  • Review results to evaluate execution of Program Managers and recommend/implement corrective actions as needed to address identified issues.
  • Special projects as assigned.
  • Work closely with CUO to garner full view and understanding of external marketplace trends, anticipate customer needs, and recommend pro-active actions for product, appetite and process with full external focus.

SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE / ABILITIES

  • Strong written and verbal communication skill
  • Fundamental knowledge of actuarial science
  • Working knowledge of all Microsoft Office applications
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact on a positive and professional basis with a wide variety of staff, agents, and reinsurers

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelors required.
  • Advanced degree or CPCU preferred.
  • Preferred15 years multi-line underwriting experience
  • Preferred 5 years Program Management underwriting experience
  • Experience with P&L ownership and portfolio management
