JOB TITLE: Reference Librarian

JOB SUMMARY:

The Reference Librarian assists researchers in their use of the research collection, which includes published materials, archives and manuscripts, photographs, architectural drawings and other related print materials.

JOB PURPOSE:

The Reference Librarian will primarily provide assistance to researchers using the research collection, including published materials, archives and manuscripts, photographs, architectural drawings and other related print materials, all with the overall goal of achieving the Museum’s mission. The Reference Librarian will use advanced knowledge and exercise discretion and judgment with respect to this position’s essential functions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide research services to the Abakanowicz Research Center’s audience of academic researchers, independent scholars, university and high school students, architects, community organizations, house historians, hobbyists, genealogists, and other individuals interested in Chicago history
  • Serve collection items to researchers in the Abakanowicz Research Center, providing appropriate guidance and supervision on the use and handling of materials
  • Respond to email and written reference inquiries pertaining to Chicago history and the research collection collections by providing ready information, referral, and guidance on the use of CHM and related collections and information sources
  • Serve as the contact person for researcher questions regarding the restricted Chicago Police Department Red Squad records
  • Provide introductions to using research collection and the Abakanowicz Research Center’s holdings and services to interns, Museum members, college classes, and area librarians
  • Work within the Research and Access Department to develop finding aids and research guides to research collection materials, and to related databases and reference sources, and to related holdings in other institutions
  • Stay conversant with online research resources and share that knowledge with researchers and fellow staff
  • Coordinate Abakanowicz Research Center’s Chicago Metro History Day services
  • Participate in the development of policies, procedures, and strategies governing the service and use of the research collection
  • Participate in training of the Photocopy/Scan Assistant, the Research Center Page, and the Research Center Associate and Architecture Specialist
  • Advise the Director of Research and Access and Chief Librarian on development of annual goals and objectives for the Research and Access Department
  • Represent the Museum in appropriate local, national, and international forums
  • Deal diplomatically and effectively with members of the public
  • Work with fragile paper and film-based materials
  • Work Tuesdays through Saturdays from September through May (Mondays through Fridays from June through August)
  • Ascend and descend stairs
  • Lift, carry, or otherwise move objects/boxes weighing up to 25 pounds

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Instruct researchers, staff, interns, and volunteers how to use the online catalog, other online resources, microfilm equipment, and other self-service equipment
  • Maintain reference materials in good order
  • Other duties as needed

REPORTS TO: Director of Research and Access and Chief Librarian

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

The Reference Librarian works with members of the Collections and Curatorial Affairs Departments in order to gather and keep track of the location of CHM materials that are used for exhibition and other events; with the Visitor Services Department, the Communications Department, and the External Engagement and Development Department. The Reference Librarian provides services to researchers and other members of the public.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science At least three years of experience as a reference librarian; experience in a research setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of Chicago and its history
  • Knowledge of the Library of Congress classification system
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to deal diplomatically and effectively with members of the public
  • Ability to work with fragile paper and film-based materials
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to ascend and descend stairs
  • Ability to lift and carry objects/boxes weighing up to 25 pounds
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellent public service
  • Commitment to the mission, values, and programs of the Chicago History Museum
