Residence Director Job at Meredith College
The Residence Director position provides residents with professional guidance and supervision in a living-learning environment as they develop during their time at Meredith. Each Residence Director is selected for personal integrity, maturity and independence. The Residence Directors live in the hall with the residents and they must be ever conscious of their behavior, attitudes, and serve as a positive role model for the students with whom they interact. This position has an estimated start of August 2023, with the possibility of summer 2023 employment.
The position description is a framework of the general responsibilities of the job. Modifications of the position description can be made during the academic year and the position will be reviewed annually. Each staff member will receive a Staff Agreement during training that more completely spells out the day-to-day duties and responsibilities of the position.
General responsibilities of the Residence Director position include:
I. Staff supervision, training and evaluation
A. Supervise a staff of Resident Assistants.
B. Lead weekly staff meetings to communicate information via weekly staff meeting agenda.
C. Discuss personnel issues, recognize contributions, provide and solicit feedback for staff.
D. Provide staff and professional development activities for the Resident Assistants.
E. Facilitate the resolution of roommate conflicts by providing guidance to the Resident Assistants, intervening when necessary, and referring cases to the appropriate offices/personnel.
F. Conduct bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with RAs.
G. Conduct annual evaluations of Resident Assistant staff.
H. Assist in coordinating and presenting staff training throughout the year.
II. Community building and programming
A. Understand Meredith’s Honor Code in the Student Handbook and residence hall policies in the Guide to Community Living to promote a healthy and respectful living community.
B. Assist residents in their understanding of College policies, the Honor Code, and policies within the Guide to Community Living.
C. Maintain an office that is welcoming and inviting to residents.
D. Provide oversight of Resident Assistant programs and events to ensure they meet the needs of the residents.
E. Create and offer educational programs to our residential communities.
F. Identify and encourage student involvement in campus leadership opportunities.
G. Maintain a level of visibility on campus by frequenting the dining hall and attending events/programs on campus.
H. Educate residents about policies and procedures in both the Student Handbook and Guide to Community Living.
I. Support the campus community by attending college Traditions and volunteering for events of interest and ability to help.
III. Crisis management and on-call duty
A. Participate in the Residence Director on-call duty rotation for all campus residents.
B. Support RAs on duty with questions, concerns, and incidents requiring attention.
C. Serve as the first responder to residents in crisis.
D. Assess crisis situations and develop a plan for resolution contacting the Director of Residence Life, Dean of Students, or other members of the Incident Management Team as necessary.
E. Meet with and assist residents with conflicts including roommate and personal conflicts.
F. Accompany residents needing medical attention to the hospital as required.
G. Follow-up with residents who have exhibited signs of crisis, depression, or stress and those reported through the Director of Residence Life, Dean of Students, Assistant Dean of Students, the CARE Team, or other notification avenues and student support services.
H. Communicate resident concerns and updates in a timely manner to the Director of Residence Life, Dean of Students, Assistant Dean of Students, and other appropriate College personnel.
I. Maintain and foster relationships with Campus Police, the Counseling Center/Disability Services staff, Campus Dining, and Facilities Services.
J. Submit incident reports in a timely manner. Refer students to Honor Council as necessary.
IV. Administrative duties
A. Maintain a minimum of 12 office hours per week in the residence hall (four days per week).
B. Work in the Office of Residence Life one afternoon per week from 1pm – 5pm.
C. Attend weekly Residence Director staff meetings and bi-weekly RHA or RA in-service meetings.
D. Complete paperwork and administrative tasks including room condition reports, room changes, and Monthly Summary Reports.
E. Check RD Residence Life Office mailbox daily.
F. Check and respond to email at least twice daily for announcements, updates, and resident concerns.
G. Distribute information to Resident Assistants in a timely manner.
H. Represent Residence Life for Admissions Open Days, Experience Meredith, and other prospective student events.
I. Provide assistance in retention and assessment initiatives including being aware of the variety of campus resources students frequent, gather data from peer institutions, conduct focus groups, etc.
J. Administrative duties as assigned.
V. Facility management
A. Weekly walk through each floor of the building(s) to ensure the safety and security of the residence halls and residents.
B. Promptly notify Facilities Services of safety and/or maintenance concerns.
C. Conduct health and safety room inspections with the Resident Assistants each semester.
D. Conduct closing room inspections with the Resident Assistants for Fall Break, Thanksgiving, semester break, Spring Break, and Easter.
E. Maintain effective working relationships with Housekeeping staff and Maintenance personnel.
F. Assist residents in communicating with Facilities Services to ensure room repairs are completed in a timely manner.
G. Regularly monitor the door access system to ensure security and notify appropriate personnel when malfunctions occur.
VI. Staff recruitment and selection
A. Participate in marketing the Resident Assistant position during the recruitment cycle.
B. Recruit Resident Assistant candidates through encouragement cards and personal contact.
C. Serve as main interviewers for individual Resident Assistant interviews.
D. Observe Resident Assistant candidate group process activities.
E. Assist with hiring Resident Assistants for the following academic year.
F. Assist with Residence Director selection through interviews and evaluation.
VII. Professional and Career Development
A. Identify areas of interest and work with appropriate offices to gain new skills, knowledge, and experience as desired.
B. Take an active approach toward career development such as advising an organization, assisting with college events, presenting workshops, and attending college-sponsored professional development opportunities.
C. Participate in Residence Director In-Service training offered 2-4 times a semester.
Bachelor’s degree required. Prefer experience as a Resident Assistant, involvement in Residence Hall Association, or other relevant leadership experience. Experience with Google docs and other campus/popular technologies preferred.
The position is 9 ½ months generally starting the last Monday in July through a week after Commencement. Dates may be modified as needed dependent upon the college’s opening. Residence Directors are compensated with a beginning salary paid in 10 installments (August through May), a 15-meal per week + $200 declining balance meal plan while the dining hall is open. A partially furnished apartment including internet utilities, a laptop computer with internet access and a parking pass are provided. This position has an estimated start of August 2023, with the possibility of summer 2023 employment.
