Essex North Shore is seeking a School Counselor to join the School Counseling Department.

The School Counselor works to maximize student success and promote student self-discovery while working to ensure access and equity for all students. Working with students individually and in group settings, the School Counselor will engage school-based faculty, staff, and administration, as well as students’ caregivers and relevant community members to facilitate student growth and development.


FAIR LABOR STANDARDS ACT (FLSA) CLASSIFICATION:

This position is classified as Exempt (Professional).


REPORTING STRUCTURE:

The School Counselor reports to the Director of School Counseling.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Licensed, or eligible for licensure as a School Counselor (5-12) by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (MA DESE).
  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university in counseling or a related field.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, with adolescents and adults.
  • Commitment to remain current in the profession and content field.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and in conformity with MA DESE certification requirements.


DUTIES:

  • Assist students with developing and applying skills to transition from school to school, grade-to-grade, and school to career.
  • Assist administration with the registration, placement, and orientation of new students.
  • Advise students to engage in goal setting, including academic and career planning.
  • Deliver and maintain relevant developmental school counseling curricula aligned to ENSATS’ Mission Statement and Graduate Profile as well as current MA DESE, the Massachusetts School Counselors Association, and the American School Counselor Association standards.
  • Coordinate school-based, post-secondary career pathways, and transition planning initiatives and communications (e.g.: college application process, financial aid, scholarship and/or award information, Armed Forces and Military Access).
  • As directed, assist in the administration and interpretation of standardized tests and assessments, including but not limited to MCAS, College Board, ASVAB, etc.
  • As appropriate, attend, facilitate, and/or lead after-school afternoon and/or evening home school collaboration activities or events.
  • Monitor the academic, social, emotional, and/or behavioral progress of students on assigned caseload.
  • Make ongoing assessments of student functioning through interviewing, observation, and consultation with colleagues, caregivers, and collaterals, including but not limited to sending district partners and other means of data collection as necessary and appropriate.
  • Individually and/or as part of a school and/or community-based team, advocate for individual student’s needs to support optimal student learning by developing and refining school-based intervention plans and making recommendations or referrals for community-based supports for students who are experiencing social, emotional, and/or behavioral challenges.
  • Provide short-term, school-based counseling to identified students.
  • Participate in the SST, §504, IEP, and/or other tiered-intervention processes, as needed and appropriate.
  • Provide interim triage services for students not directly assigned to caseload, as needed.
  • Maintain student records according to state and federal guidelines and provide data and written reports as needed while protecting the confidentiality of information received in the school-based counseling process, as specified by law and ethical standards.
  • Follow and enforce all school protocols and handbook expectations.
  • Model appropriate, respectful behavior for students.
  • Follow professional guidelines concerning confidentiality, consent, documentation and reporting, professionalism, etc.
  • Make all necessary and appropriate written and verbal communications to ensure each student’s safety and optimal development.
  • Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities not inconsistent with the role, as the Director of School Counseling may assign.


PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work involves student interaction and is performed primarily in an office or classroom setting.


TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This position is part of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Hathorne Teachers Federation and the School District.
