SUMMARY
This role is responsible for creating and leading external communications and public relations plans to raise the profile of the materials protection and coatings industries and AMPP’s priority issues, and protect the reputation of the organization. This is achieved through targeting of AMPP members, media, policymakers, to industry management, and other similar stakeholders, to strategically shape public opinion of AMPP and increase awareness of its brand. Broadly, this includes conceptualizing and implementing strategic initiatives and related public relations/social media goals and campaigns, oversight of general social media activities, building relationships with key media and developing AMPP’s spokespersons’ capabilities with media, managing crisis communications incidents, and supporting AMPP CEO/officers in public-facing events/speeches.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Anticipate, analyze and interpret public opinion, attitudes and issues that might have an impact, for good or ill, on the leadership and reputation of the organization.
- Position AMPP as the leading resource and thought leader on materials protection; drive a positive image of the organization before industry stakeholders and the public.
- Develop strategic initiatives to raise awareness related to AMPP’s mission and goals, and communicate policy initiatives pertinent to the materials protection industries to stakeholders, legislators, media, and others.
- Create and lead external communication strategies via public relations, media relations, and social media goals and campaigns that positively impact AMPP’s brand positioning and thought leadership role among key influencers (government, top industry management, etc.).
- Develop, maintain, and exercise relationships with key media that create media opportunities to promote AMPP activities and mission. Manage media inquiries from global press, act as AMPP’s media contact, and arrange spokesperson interviews after training and preparing members/staff/executives for media interviews. Be confident and capable in speaking to media on behalf of AMPP relative to nontechnical content.
- Generate stories that influence, press releases, white papers, other content related to public relations strategies or campaigns, video and other content needed for effective social media goals/campaigns, and communication materials for CEO/officers which includes presentations and scripting for events. Write or edit as needed brochure copy, staff presentations, marketing materials, and other materials.
- In relation to Public Affairs activities, monitor and manage AMPP social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and others), including coordination and development of content and campaigns with other staff also dependent on social media.
- Manage crisis communications incidents in collaboration with the Executive Office.
- Demonstrably exude professional passion for promoting AMPP’s materials protection industries, qualified personnel in AMPP’s industries, and AMPP’s mission.
- Responsible to work with other departments to help ensure all AMPP messaging is clear, consistent, and purposeful.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
Some travel is expected for this role and passport is required.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s Degree in public relations, public policy, communications, media, marketing, journalism or writing, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a field that utilizes influencing and writing skills.
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in the use of social media to influence target audiences.
