Job Description
This position will be the primary backup for the visual inspector and lab technician roles. Provide training and support/coaching to new quality employees. In addition, this role will be responsible for paint line quality trouble shooting and problem resolution, setup support and/or adjustments, coil inspections/rework, mill and paint claim investigation data and sample collection, and daily quality audits and shift summary report.
- Visually inspect the coil from stitch to stitch for coater and/or mill defects of any type, such as starve outs, blisters, paint skips, edge waves, buckles, rust, etc.
- Record and document the condition of every coil produced during the shift on the proper paperwork and data entry including location on strip and in coil, severity and length of defects.
- Obtain mill claim samples as needed; painted and bare if possible, pictures are acceptable.
- On coater fault rejects save samples as needed
- Responsible for product testing each finished coil, according to standard quality control procedures
- Ensures that all finished products meet or exceed customer expectations
- Recommends immediate action to operations employees
- Performs verification analysis (i.e. follow-up testing/inspection) to determine if corrective actions have arrested a problem on the production line(s)
- Performs process control testing on the coil coating line(s) during the operating shift (i.e. solution tests, etc.)
- Collaborate with production leadership to determine the appropriate process changes required to correct quality issues.
- Utilizes various instruments and measuring devices (color & gloss meters, spectrophotometer, thickness devices, etc.) to perform special product or process tests as required
- First point of contact for setup or process changes to correct defect identified during test strips or during coil production.
- Provide lunch breaks for inspector and lab technician.
- Inspect and rework coils on the inspection line.
- Train new inspectors and lab technicians. Provide coaching and feedback as needed.
- Collect samples and data for mill claims and paint claim investigations.
- Perform daily audits at each CTQ (Critical to Quality) station.
- Perform quarterly internal audits.
- Assist with calibration verification.
- Responsible for understanding and complying with the fundamental principles associated with the Quality and Environmental Management System in place at Metal Coaters of California, Inc.
- Communicates daily with internal personnel from Production and Quality Control in order to assist in resolving problems and achieving company goals.
Qualifications

- High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) and a minimum of one (1) year of related experience.
- 1 year minimum previous experience as a quality control inspector and lab technician.
- Ability to read and comprehend documents including safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and simple correspondence. Also, the ability to communicate information (in small group situations) to other employees.
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as fractions, percentages, area, circumference, volume and densities. Also, the ability to apply the concepts of statistics and probability to practical situations.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to perform work instructions that are furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Also, the ability to solve problems, which involve multiple variables in a standard situation.
- PC Skills: Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and Sharepoint ; Oracle
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk. The employee is occasionally required to stand; sit; use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance. Specific vision abilities include close-up and distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally performs near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and extreme cold or heat. The noise level in the work environment is considered moderate.
