The VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS) is part of the VA Sierra Pacific Network (VISN 21), which serves Veterans in northern and central California, Nevada, Hawaii, the Philippines, and the U.S. Territories in the Pacific Basin. VAPAHCS consists of three inpatient facilities (VA Palo Alto Division, VA Menlo Park Division, and VA Livermore Division), plus five Community-Based Outpatient clinics (CBOCs) in San Jose, Capitola, Monterey, Modesto, and Fremont; as well as two residential homes for Veterans in the Compensated Work Therapy program. It is a highly complex facility based on the patient population served, clinical services offered across the continuum of care, and education, research, and administrative complexity.

VAPAHCS operates nearly 800 beds, including three nursing homes and a 100-bed homeless domiciliary – all to serve more than 67,000 enrolled veterans. VAPAHCS operates one of the largest integrated health care systems in the VA in terms of specialized programs, research, and graduate medical education; primarily affiliated with Stanford University School of Medicine. VAPAHCS’ Research Program is the second largest in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) with annual funding of approximately $58 million. Social work services are available at all locations within the health care system. Social Workers deliver an array of both general and comprehensive services to address a broad spectrum of psychosocial problems and complex medical and mental health diagnoses encountered in typical or specialized residential, inpatient or outpatient settings. The Social Worker completes psychosocial assessments and provides clinical case management services to eligible Veterans and their family members to meet biological, psychological, social, and environmental needs. Their health care and psychosocial problems/needs are complex, so a high degree of clinical oversight, critical thinking skills, and creative problem solving is required. The incumbent is required to interact not only with the Veteran but also family, significant others, community agencies, and other interdisciplinary staff. To provide overall comprehensive and integrated treatment, the Social Worker is an essential member of an interdisciplinary team.
