The Civil Engineer - Design Lead is a key role at Sambatek and is a technical expert in their field. This includes Commercial, Stormwater, or others as determined by the company. This position is an advancement from Project Engineer for those following a technical path.

The Opportunity

• Primarily responsible for leading the design and development of project documents which generally includes the following responsibilities:

  • Licensed Professional Engineer who serves as Engineer of Record on select projects. Responsible for delivering complete and accurate design and construction documents that meet agency requirements and exceed client expectations.

  • Responsible for independently performing the necessary design tasks to prepare preliminary and final plans in accordance with Sambatek’s, client’s and LGU’s standards.

  • Responsible for the preparation and review of project reports and specifications (plan notes or separate booklet).

  • Responsible for obtaining agency plan checklist requirements from Project Manager for all applications and delivering required documents.

  • Responsible for providing design guidance to production staff (Project Engineers, CAD Technicians). The Design Lead should work to minimize their production time, and focus on moving billable work to the production team.

  • Works with Project Manager to develop and/or review project scope, budgets, and schedule. Works diligently to complete work within scope, within budget and on schedule. The Project Manager is expected to give the Design Lead access to projects in Ajera to facilitate this responsibility.

  • Communicates and coordinates project work with all project team members (including other departments and disciplines).

  • Completes quality control plan for each project and reports any concerns and/or questions to Project Manager.

• Leads the construction phase communication and administration for projects, with assistance from the Project Engineer.

• Works within a collaborative project team environment that promotes and fosters excellent communication, inter-departmental interaction, and respect for all project team members.

  
  

Sales and Marketing responsibilities:

• Primary focus is to maintain existing client relationships by providing exceptional service and quality through the development of our documents and deliverables.

• Responsive to Sambatek staff and clients in a timely fashion.

  
  

Employee Development/Professional Development responsibilities:

• Commercial Design Leads must demonstrate proficiency in the skills listed on the Sambatek Commercial Training Outline.

• Design Lead are also encouraged and supported by the company to obtain expertise beyond base skills in a relevant field, such as stormwater management, grading design & analysis, erosion control, etc.

• Provides technical mentoring to developing professionals (Project Engineers/EITs).

  
  

For clarity, the following tasks are not included with the Design Lead role:

• Proposal preparation.

• Client communications and pursuits, except for project design related communications with clients.

• Attendance at marketing events.

• Preparation of contracts and change orders.

• Overall project budget responsibility (civil phase budgets shall be met by the team and the design manger).

• Review of local zoning codes, entitlement process requirements and submittals (City, County, DOT, watershed, etc.), and permitting requirements and submittals (City, County, State, etc.). The Project Manager is responsible for completion of this research and providing accurate requirements to the team and Design Lead.

• Project invoicing.

• Project collections.

• Client maintenance.

  
  

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field

• PE License for the State of North Carolina, or ability to obtain one preferred

• 10+ years experience in a design engineering role

• Proven experience leading a team of engineers

• Strong understanding of design engineering processes and quality control standards

• Working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D software

• Excellent communication, presentation, and project management skills
