Position Title: Staff Accountant - Government Contracts

Reporting Relationship: Controller or Finance Manager
Position Summary
The Staff Accountant – Government Contracts is dedicated to one of NYAP’s large programs funded by federal government contracts/grants. The Staff Accountant will be responsible for entering and monitoring accounts payable and credit card expenses; month-end journal entries, allocations, accruals, and other close activities; producing ad hock reports and analysis; and assisting in preparing budgets. The Staff Accountant will ensure compliance with GAAP and government accounting standards and procedures such as FAR, CAS, and GAS. Office location is Columbus OH. This position can be located in-office in Columbus or can be a fully remote position for the right dedicated individual with occasional travel to Columbus.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Staff Accountant will perform duties including, but not limited to:

  • Performing all work in a manner consistent with the National Youth Advocate Program’s mission, values, and philosophies.
  • Ensuring all work is in compliance with government requirements including GAAP, Cost Accounting Standards, (CAS), Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR), Government Auditing Standards (GAS), Contract Cost Principles, Estimating System, accounting system, and other financial and accounting requirements.
  • Entering all accounts payable for the assigned program. Reviewing AP before entering to ensure coding is accurate. Monitoring expenses to ensure entries are correct, aligned with program budgets, and in compliance with requirements including accrual-based accounting, CAS, FAR, and GAS, and accounting system and other financial and accounting requirements.
  • Entering all credit card expense entries. Reviewing credit card expense reports to ensure all expenses are accounted for, coding is accurate, and expenses are aligned with the assigned program budgets. Ensuring entries are made in a timely manner.
  • Making month-end journal entries, which may include allocation entries, and other close activities.
  • Conducting financial analysis for reasonableness to ensure all expenses have been accounted for according to accrual-based accounting. Recommending accrual entries to account for missing expenses, and making approved accrual entries.
  • Assisting with financial audits (internal and external) for the assigned program areas including responding to audit requests and issues and acting as the government contract audit liaison.
  • Supporting NYAP management and government project managers with ad-hoc analysis, reporting, and information.
  • Maintaining strict confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Performing other duties as assigned or required.

Key Working Relationships:

  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with contractual agencies, funding sources including referral agencies, insurance companies and subcontractors.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with program/s management, staff and other internal service divisions and departments.
  • Maintain working relationship with IT consultants and related personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of Bachelor's Degree required, preferably in Finance or Accounting. Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in accounting and/or finance will also be considered.
  • Two years’ experience working as an accountant, with general ledger, accounting system, and financial statement preparation experience.
  • Experience with automated cost reporting systems and spreadsheets.
  • Experience with financial presentations is preferred.
  • Experience working with non-profit and federal government contracts/grants is strongly preferred.
  • Display excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group, executives, managers, and subject matter experts.
  • Office location is Columbus Ohio. This position can be located in-office in Columbus or a fully remote position with occasional travel to Columbus for the right dedicated individual. Must be a self-starter with high attention to detail and have the proven ability to work independently, be well organized, demonstrate capacity for self-initiative, time management, and ability to effectively work-from-home while also working in a cohesive team with common goals.
  • Proficient use of desktop and laptop computers, smart phones and tablets, printers, fax machines and photocopiers as well as software including accounting and finance software, word processing, spreadsheet and database programs. Experience using MS Dynamics and NetSuite a plus.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $49,000.00 - $52,000.00 per year
