The City of Arlington is hiring a Strategic Initiatives Analyst to join the Office of Strategic Initiatives. We are looking for individuals who want to apply creative, systemic thinking to solving real-world problems, merging technical aptitude with a strong desire for community service.

The Office of Strategic Initiatives is responsible for special project management for the City Manager’s Office, as well as the city’s efforts in open data, research and analytics, neighborhood engagement, and historic preservation.

The Strategic Initiatives Analyst will be responsible for a variety of project management support duties, including in-house technical analysis, data visualization, mapping, and research tasks. Project examples include analysis of parcel valuation data, demographic data, economic impact analysis, creating interactive webmaps, and policy research for white papers. However, job duties are not limited to technical or back-of-house work only; public involvement and political savvy are expectations of the position.

The Strategic Initiatives Analyst will work closely with a team of individuals in providing analytical support for City-wide projects by using highly developed research and analysis skills, experience with large datasets, and understanding of GIS products. They will regularly need to communicate technical material to a variety of audiences, making strong verbal, writing, and data visualization skills necessary (i.e. synthesizing high-level geospatial analysis into infographics for public consumption).

The ideal candidate will have a keen desire to solve problems and have a demonstrated ability to use or acquire new skills in statistical analysis, GIS, economic and fiscal impact analysis, etc. They will have a background in planning, public administration, economic development, geography, or other closely related field with an ability to think comprehensively and strategically. Preferred skills include, but are not limited to:

• A self-starter and problem solver with strong interpersonal skills and attention to detail, the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, and the ability to coordinate a wide variety of projects at one time

• Ability to perform research and work on varied projects autonomously

• Ability to effectively communicate complex technical findings to non-technical audiences

• Experience in geospatial analysis (desktop and web-based ArcGIS)

• Data visualization, graphic design, and dashboarding skills

• Microsoft Office Suite including advanced Excel use, MS Access

• Adobe Creative Suite

• Knowledge of open data trends and processes

• Familiarity with economic and fiscal impact analysis procedures and modeling

• Familiarity with database design and website development
