Do you have previous street maintenance experience? Do you enjoy working among a team in a busy outdoor setting? If so, we have just the position for you in the City of Napa, Public Works Department. As a Street Maintenance Assistant (Part-Time), you will assist with repairs to City infrastructure such as streets, sidewalks, signs and parking garages. Our team is responsible for operating and maintaining city streets and the public right-of-way.

Applicants should have the ability to carry out oral and written directions, maintain collaborative working relationships, work in outdoor environments, be detail oriented, and work well with the public.

This is a temporary part-time position not to exceed 1,000 hours. Temporary and part-time employees are at-will and not covered by the City's Civil Service System. No benefits are afforded to temporary employees, with the exception of participation in the mandatory temporary employee retirement plan.

TYPICAL TASKS

  • Cleans and removes debris from streets, gutters, storm drains, catch basins, drainage ditches, sidewalks, by shoveling, raking, sweeping, and picking up debris.
  • Assists in breaking up pavement, digging holes, cutting trenches, excavating and filling in holes in streets, pathways and other paved surfaces, chipping, using sledge hammer, shovel, pick, spade, rake, hoe, hand tools or jackhammer as directed.
  • Assists in loading, transporting, and unloading equipment, materials, debris, and other heavy objects related to maintenance.
  • May operate vehicles, and light equipment and power tools necessary to complete maintenance.
  • Assists in setting up traffic control including signs and barricades, and directs traffic around work sites.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance on equipment as necessary.
  • May remove illegal dumping or dead animals from city right of ways as necessary.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of: Functions, characteristics and accurate use and care of common hand tools and safe work practices.
  • Ability to: Be trained in the use of supplies, tools and equipment used in the work areas as described above in a variety of weather conditions. Basic skills in following simple oral and written instructions; skills in performing manual work, lifting heavy objects up to 90 pounds; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other persons.
  • Special Requirements: Possession of a California Class C Driver's License.
